Description

Fuchsia ‘Jollies Nantes’ is a compact and particularly floriferous variety, prized for its single red flowers with violet corollas which renew themselves for six months. It brings life and colour to shady spots in the garden, on a terrace or a balcony with little sun. An excellent variety for flowering pots, window boxes and flowering tubs.

This cultivar belongs to the Onagraceae family. In horticulture, it is classified as Fuchsia × hybrida, a very common name in use, or Fuchsia × standishii according to botanical sources. ‘Jollies Nantes’ is a German introduction from Brandkamp GmbH. It belongs to the Jollies horticultural series, which groups varieties selected for their good branching, ease of cultivation and excellent performance in pots.
‘Jollies Nantes’ quickly forms an upright clump approximately 40 cm in all directions. Its flexible stems, becoming firmer with age, bear opposite, ovate to lanceolate, finely serrate, fairly deep green leaves. The foliage is deciduous in our climates, or semi-evergreen in a greenhouse. The flowers, in the shape of hanging bells, are single. Their tube and sepals are red, while the inner petals display a deep violet. The prominent stamens further accentuate the delicacy of each flower. Flowering extends from May to October, and they renew themselves as long as the autumn remains mild.

The ‘Jollies Nantes’ variety is useful for flowering partially shaded areas over a long period. This fuchsia is perfect in pots, in a window box or a tub, in a rich substrate that remains moist in summer. You can pair it with Trailing Begonia Illumination® Apricot ShadesAjuga reptans ‘Black Scallop’, or Tiarella ‘Sugar and Spice’Coleus FlameThrower Salsa Roja also makes a very good companion; its velvety dark red foliage highlights the fuchsia's flowering without stealing the show.

Discovered in Santo Domingo in the 17th century and acclimatised in Europe, it was named Fuchsia in honour of a German botanist named Fuchs. Originating from South America, botanical Fuchsias have gradually been propagated. It is estimated there are around ten thousand hybrids today!

Planting and care

Plant Fuchsia Jollies Nantes in rich, moist, and well-drained substrate, in sun or partial shade. Fuchsias require plenty of light to flower well, but they are sensitive to full summer sun (even more so in southern regions). Water regularly, as they are drought-sensitive, but avoid overwatering.
When grown in pots, ensure no water remains in the saucer, as this can cause root rot and leaf drop. Feed with a liquid fertiliser for fuchsias every two weeks during the growth period. Regularly remove faded flowers and dry leaves. You can pinch back young shoots to encourage the plant to branch out and produce more flowers, which are always borne on the current year's shoots. Cut back in autumn after flowering. Fuchsias can also be grown indoors, where they are perennial and evergreen.
