Description

Fuchsias are floriferous shrubs, which have been created through successive and repeated cross-breeding, resulting in thousands of varieties. In cold regions the stumps will benefit from being protected with a layer of dead leaves after cutting back the foliage to 10 cm (3.9 in) above the ground.

Microphylla Fuchsias are a very pretty species with linear leaves, slightly smaller than those of F. magellanica, forming a lovely dense bush. The flowers, the size of rice grains, are bright pinkish-red. Hardy on the coast; elsewhere, it requires the protection of a litter layer of dead leaves. Suitable for any fresh humus-bearing soil, without limestone.

Planting and care

The Fuchsia microphylla ssp. hemschleiana will find its place in the garden in mild Atlantic climates, where frost is not severe. It withstands down to -7°C to -9°C at the peak, possibly suffering some damage to the foliage, but its stump will then regrow. In Mediterranean regions, it must be planted in partial shade, under taller vegetation that will also provide some atmospheric humidity. Plant it in spring in neutral to moderately acidic, humus-bearing, moist and well-drained soil. This will give it time to root before its first winter. Water regularly during the first two years in the growing season to help the stump establish, and also during hot spells. Avoid letting the soil dry out; you can apply a light mulch to help keep it moist. This plant requires little care beyond these precautions.
