Primula vulgaris 'Scentsation Red Cream' is an amazing early variety with large, highly fragrant flowers in a fantastic bicolour arrangement. Its corollas, graduating from yellow to red, bloom abundantly from January to March, on large, wavy-edged, evergreen dark green leaves. Often grown as biennials, primroses are perfect in pots, window boxes, and borders. These plants thrive in sun or partial shade, in fertile and moist soil.
Primula vulgaris 'Scentsation Red Cream' is a short-lived perennial plant, often grown as a biennial, belonging to the Primulaceae family. It is part of a series of recent cultivars that stand out for their unusual colours and their early and highly fragrant flowering. These are floriferous plants that form dense clumps of foliage in just a few months, growing up to 15 to 20cm (6 to 8in) tall and 15cm (6in) wide. They develop evergreen rosettes of broadly ovate, wavy-edged and veined leaves, in a beautiful dark green shade. 'Scentsation Red Cream' produces large flowers, 4 to 5cm (2in) in diameter, that bloom for several weeks between January and March. They are delicately edged in bright pinkish-red on a butter-yellow background maculated with golden yellow. Gathered in perfect bouquets, they are carried by short peduncles and almost hide the foliage.
'Scentsation' primroses are hardy, versatile, unique, and easy to grow. They deserve a place in every garden and on every balcony. Generous and fragrant, they announce and precede the return of spring. Whether in borders or in containers, these small plants are ideal companions for tulips, pansies, horned violets, and forget-me-nots. Plant them under the cover of deciduous trees, in rockeries and lawns, where they can weave among snowdrops and violets. The leaves and flowers are edible and can be consumed raw or cooked.
Properties of primroses
They have the same properties as common primrose and oxlip. The flowers have soothing and calming properties, and are used in expectorant preparations. The leaves help prevent bruising, and the entire plant (especially the root) has analgesic, anti-spasmodic, diuretic, and expectorant properties.
Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible in pots and flower boxes, or directly in flower beds.

Botanical data
Plant in September-October, upon receipt of the plug plants. The plug plants can be planted in pots and containers or directly in the ground in finely prepared and enriched soil. If the planned location is not ready yet, or the conditions are unfavourable for planting, you can grow them in pots for 4 to 6 weeks.
In pots and containers, use good soil for flowering plants (such as geranium compost) enriched with clay and slow-release fertiliser. The soil should be light and well-draining. The top of the plug should be level with the soil. Water generously upon planting and during the following weeks, as the plug plants can dry out quickly. However, be careful with excess water! Use containers with drainage holes and empty the saucer 10 minutes after watering. Water even during winter if it doesn't rain, or if the container is placed in a sheltered spot. Do not water during freezing periods.
They are fast-growing and produce an abundance of blooms, making them hungry plants. As soon as growth resumes, at the end of February or beginning of March, and throughout the flowering period, apply a liquid fertiliser for flowering plants containing iron and trace elements 1 to 2 times a week with the watering water. Remove faded flowers to encourage new blooms. Once the flowering is over, container-grown plants can be replanted in the garden in partial shade.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
