Description

'Scentsation Yellow Cream' is an attractive variety of Primula vulgaris adorned with large, fragrant flowers in a fantastic combination of pink, white, and golden yellow. Planted in autumn, it usually blooms from January to March, on large, wavy, evergreen leaves that are a vibrant green. Often grown as biennials, primroses are perfect in pots, window boxes, flower beds, and borders. These plants thrive in full sun or partial shade, in fertile and moist soil.

Primula vulgaris 'Scentsation Yellow Cream' is a short-lived perennial plant, often grown as a biennial, belonging to the Primulaceae family. It is part of a series of recent cultivars that stand out with their unusual colours and early, fragrant flowering. These plants form dense, compact clumps of foliage, reaching a height of 15 to 20cm (6 to 8in) and a width of 15cm (6in) in just a few months. They develop persistent rosettes of broadly ovate, wavy, veined leaves in a beautiful dark green colour. 'Scentsation Yellow Cream' produces large flowers, 4 to 5cm (2in) in diameter, that bloom for several weeks between January and March. They boast a white background that is extensively edged with intense pink, and open to reveal a golden yellow throat. Arranged in perfect clusters, they are borne on short peduncles and almost conceal the foliage.

'Scentsation' primroses are hardy biennials that are versatile, unique, and truly easy to grow. They deserve a place in every garden and on every balcony. Colourful, floriferous, and low-maintenance, they herald the return of spring. Perfect for pots, containers, borders, and flower beds, they even thrive in shade with fertile and moist soil, alongside botanical tulips, pansies, horned violets, and forget-me-nots. Plant them under the cover of deciduous trees, in rockeries and lawns, where they can weave among snowdrops and violets. Both the leaves and flowers are edible and can be consumed raw or cooked.

Properties of primroses

They have the same properties as common primrose and oxlip. The flowers have soothing and calming properties, and are used in expectorant preparations. The leaves help prevent bruising, and the entire plant (especially the root) has analgesic, anti-spasmodic, diuretic, and expectorant properties.

Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible in pots and flower boxes, or directly in flower beds.

Planting and care

Plant in September-October, upon receipt of the plug plants. The plug plants can be planted in pots and containers or directly in the ground in finely prepared and enriched soil. If the planned location is not ready yet, or the conditions are unfavourable for planting, you can grow them in pots for 4 to 6 weeks.

In pots and containers, use good soil for flowering plants (such as geranium compost) enriched with clay and slow-release fertiliser. The soil should be light and well-draining. The top of the plug should be level with the soil. Water generously upon planting and during the following weeks, as the plug plants can dry out quickly. However, be careful with excess water! Use containers with drainage holes and empty the saucer 10 minutes after watering. Water even during winter if it doesn't rain, or if the container is placed in a sheltered spot. Do not water during freezing periods.

They are fast-growing and produce an abundance of blooms, making them hungry plants. As soon as growth resumes, at the end of February or beginning of March, and throughout the flowering period, apply a liquid fertiliser for flowering plants containing iron and trace elements 1 to 2 times a week with the watering water. Remove faded flowers to encourage new blooms. Once the flowering is over, container-grown plants can be replanted in the garden in partial shade.
