These classic strawberry plants are interesting from a taste perspective... However, the delivery in my case was catastrophic... the package was all over the place, all the plants are very damaged, some of them were even taken out of their pots and should have been shipped with cardboard covers or collars... and to top it off!... There were slugs on the plants! On top of that, the package, which was posted on Thursday with a label for Saturday delivery, was actually delivered on Monday... and it seems that the fragile label that should have been placed horizontally was not respected by the carrier, who seemed to have played rugby with it... thanks. After receiving the package, I reported it to Promesse de fleurs... and their response was... it's normal, it's your fault!???? It's normal, your package was posted on Friday... well no, my dear, it was actually posted on Thursday, the date is on the shipping receipt... They are all broken, all wrinkled, it's not a big deal, what matters is the roots... well, that may be true, but no one buys plants for them to arrive in tatters... Strangely enough, they didn't mention the slugs in the package... or apologize...

More information

The Ciflorette strawberry is a variety known for the excellent taste of its fruits! It is a semi-early strawberry, yielding a good crop of strawberries in May and June. The strawberries are orangish-red in colour and have a very regular ovoid shape, quite shiny, and have an average weight of 17g. A strawberry classed as high-end with a very rich flavour profile and a good balance of sweetness and acidity. Ciflorette can be combined with perpetual varieties (Charlotte, Cijosée, Novo Gento) to extend the production over a longer period.

Description

The Ciflorette strawberry produces medium-sized fruits, with a regular oval shape, ranging in colour from orange to brick red, quite shiny and of excellent taste quality with a good balance of sweetness and acidity, and also highly aromatic. Its exceptional taste makes it highly appreciated as a high-end strawberry. It keeps well but is sensitive to high temperatures. It is a non-perpetual variety, semi-early and with fairly good productivity. It presents intermediate resistance to powdery mildew, phytophthora, anthracnose, and verticillium. Ciflorette is a variety created by Ciref in 1998.

Strawberries can be consumed in multiple ways: they can be eaten raw, with sugar, cream, or sliced thinly and dried to be added to muesli or yogurt. If you have an abundant harvest, you can also make jams, coulis, pies, ice creams or sorbets. Strawberries can also be frozen.

There are 3 categories of varieties:

- wild strawberries or perpetual strawberries, producing small fruits from June to October

- non-perpetual large fruit varieties, flowering only once a year in spring, producing very large fruits around June

- perpetual large fruit varieties, flowering twice a year or continuously, producing large fruits from June to October

Indeed, the wild strawberry or woodland strawberry, present during Roman times and the Middle Ages, was crossed in the 18th century with a species brought from Chile, allowing the obtaining, through successive selections, of different large fruit varieties.

The Strawberry is a hardy perennial belonging to the Rosaceae family. This variety has a stout habit, with evergreen trifoliate, ovate, and dentate leaves. It offers small white flowers with a golden center that will transform into large red fruits. Botanically speaking, we refer to strawberries as pseudocarps, with the achenes (seeds) appearing on the surface of the epidermis.

For harvesting, pick the fruits as they ripen, every 2 or 3 days, ideally in the morning. Strawberries are delicate, pick them with their stalk by pinching the stem 1 to 2 cm (0 to 1in) above it. The texture of the fruit is a good indicator of its ripeness. It should be firm and slightly soft to the touch. Strawberries are rich in vitamins and minerals. They can cause urticating reactions in some individuals as they stimulate the release of histamine in the body.

Planting and care

The Ciflorette Strawberry appreciates rich, deep, and well-drained soils, slightly acidic. A few months before planting, loosen the soil and add a generous amount of well-rotted compost. If your soil is chalky, add humus and then provide a mulch made of acidic materials (thorns or pine bark...). Remove adventives and stones from the soil. Planting this variety should be done in autumn. Choose a sunny location. Strawberry plants are good companions for garlic, beans, lettuce, onions, leeks, thyme, and spinach. However, they do not appreciate the company of cabbages and other brassicas. Strawberry plants remain in place for 3 to 4 years.

In open ground: Space the plants 35 cm (14in) apart in all directions. Dig a hole, place the strawberry (the collar should be level with the ground) and cover with fine soil. Water thoroughly. If your soil is moist, plant the plants on mounds 10 to 20 cm (4 to 8in) high.

In a pot: Place a layer of gravel or clay pebbles at the bottom of the pot to facilitate drainage. Fill the pot with a mixture of potting soil, garden soil, and compost. Place, cover with soil, and tamp down well. Water thoroughly.

Regularly hoe. Mulch around the plants in summer to maintain soil moisture. Install a protective net before the fruits turn red to avoid sharing your harvest with birds... You can also install ash or coffee grounds near young plants to repel slugs and snails. Water regularly, especially in hot weather. In autumn, remove dry leaves.

Apply compost on the surface in spring. In cool regions, install a tunnel in spring to protect the plants from spring frosts during flowering.

The plants need to be renewed every 3 or 4 years. This variety multiplies through stolons, small creeping stems that naturally root in the soil, forming new plants. To avoid exhausting the mother plant, cut the stolons and replant them if desired.

Wait 4 years before replanting strawberry plants in the same location.
