Description

The Fantasia Nectarine is a hardy variety that thrives in warm, sunny and sheltered locations. It is sensitive to spring frosts, with late frost resulting in the destruction of future fruits. Its moderate growth is perfect for small gardens. In August, it produces a large 8 cm (3in) diameter nectarine with a smooth, red-orange skin. The flesh is yellow, highly aromatic, sweet and juicy. Self-fertile, it does not require a pollinator.

The species name "Persica" was given to the peach tree, originally thought to be from Persia. In reality, all cultivated forms originate from northern China. The Nectarine is a natural mutation of the peach tree that occurred in the 16th century. The Fantasia Nectarine is a free variety obtained by USDA Fresno in California (USA) through the cross-breeding of Gold King X Red King seedlings.

Like many fruit trees, the Fantasia Nectarine prefers light, rich and deep soils, and does not tolerate excessive water or heavy and compact soils. It is a moderately vigorous tree with a growth habit perfectly suited for small gardens. Its semi-spreading habit indicates a tall-trunked tree with numerous horizontal branches. They are majestic trees. Its deciduous foliage is a vibrant green and emits a slight almond scent. The leaves are long, measuring 8 to 15 cm (3 to 6in) in length and 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2in) in width, with short petioles.
Its early pink flowering occurs in mid-March. This requires the tree, if grown north of the Loire River, to be situated in a sunny and sheltered location. The flowers are hermaphroditic and self-fertile. Apart from its frost-sensitive flowering, the Fantasia Nectarine is hardy and withstands frost well.
Fruiting occurs late. Its large, slightly elongated fruits are bright red with a yellow-orange background and can be harvested from mid-August. This tree does not require too much maintenance. It tolerates severe pruning, but not every year.

Nectarines can be enjoyed raw, cooked, sweet, savory, flambéed, frozen or thawed. They pair well with wine and certain meats, such as duck. They can be found in numerous recipes, particularly for jams, compotes, pastries.

Planting and care

The Fantasia Nectarine Tree is preferably planted from September to November. Dig a hole two to three times wider and deeper than the pot. On the day, place the tree with its pot in a basin of water, in order to moisten the entire root ball by capillarity. Install compost at the bottom of the hole. Place the tree in the hole, fill with a mixture of soil and compost. Gently compact around the base of the tree as you fill, ensuring that the roots are in close contact with the soil. The root ball should be completely covered. Water generously.

The Fantasia Nectarine Tree has a semi-pivoting root system. It thrives in fairly deep soils. It also prefers light and well-draining soil.

Care

Pruning instructions In the following spring after planting, a first pruning for training will be welcome. Keep only the branches that will form the framework of the tree (about 5 branches). The fruit appears on one-year-old branches. The wood that has borne fruit will not reproduce. For the pruning for fruiting, prune the branches that have already borne fruit to 2 buds above the future branching. Remove the branches in the center that are crossing each other and shorten the longest ones that go outward in order to maintain a harmonious shape.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
Pruning time January to February, December
Soil moisture Tolerant
Disease resistance Good
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
