Description

Compact and highly decorative, Ficus lyrata 'Bambino' Tibaco, marketed as Ficus Tibaco, is a dwarf fiddle-leaf fig that concentrates all the charm of the large Fiddle-leaf Fig in a version better suited to contemporary interiors. Its broad, fiddle-shaped, glossy dark green leaves overlap all along its trunk. This houseplant is best in a bright living room, office, or entrance hall, where its little touch of "tropical chic" will be appreciated.

Botanically, Ficus lyrata (synonym Ficus pandurata), known as the fiddle-leaf fig, belongs to the Moraceae family. The species originates from the humid tropical forests of West Africa, where it forms large evergreen trees with spectacular foliage.
Indoors, the dwarf cultivar 'Bambino' is cultivated, selected in the early 1990s in the greenhouses of the De Wilgenlei nursery for its slow growth and naturally compact habit. The commercial Tibaco form consists of several potted stems that create a small, dense shrub reaching 1 m to 1.50 m in height and 50 to 80 cm in width at maturity. Its habit is upright, narrow, with thick stems bearing closely set leaves. These thick, glossy leaves have a leathery texture, a dark green upper surface, and prominent, lighter-coloured veins. Fiddle or lyre-shaped, they narrow at the base and then flare out towards the tip. They measure 10 to 20 cm long by 8 to 15 cm wide. They are smaller than those of the large Ficus lyrata, but just as striking. Flowering remains rare indoors, and the small figs characteristic of the genus practically never develop.
As with other indoor ficus, the white sap, which is irritating and toxic if ingested, requires some precautions: it is best to avoid direct contact with the skin and keep the plant out of reach of young children and pets.

At home, this fiddle-leaf fig appreciates bright, filtered light, a stable temperature between 18 and 25 °C, and a fairly humid atmosphere. Slightly sensitive to cold draughts and sudden changes of location, it remains a somewhat demanding but accessible plant; we would recommend it more to enthusiasts who have already had some success with houseplants than to beginners.

To showcase Ficus Tibaco, place it in a ceramic planter, directly on the floor or on a small stool, to highlight its small tree silhouette. As companion plants, you could choose a Calathea 'Magic Star', a Syngonium wendlandii, an Episcia cupreata 'Silver Shield' and a Peperomia obtusifolia 'USA'. By playing with heights – the ficus on the floor, medium-sized plants on a piece of furniture, and carpeting species cascading down – you create a lush ensemble, in an urban jungle style.
