Description

Tradescantia sillamontana is a botanical species nicknamed White Velvet, a rather different version from the garden spiderworts. This houseplant forms a low, spreading clump, with leaves that overlap. They are thick, downy, and covered in silky white hairs. Its foliage comes alive in summer with small pink flowers. Showcase it in a hanging basket or pot in a bright room.

Tradescantia sillamontana thrives in bright indoor conditions but grows much more vigorously outdoors as soon as the weather permits. Place it in gentle sun or partial shade and bring it indoors when temperatures drop below 10°C to overwinter it away from the cold.

Belonging to the Commelinaceae family, Tradescantia sillamontana is a species native to the scrublands and woods of Nuevo Leon state in Mexico. It is also known as White Gossamer, Cobweb Spiderwort, or Velvet Spiderwort. This trailing perennial forms a low clump 20 to 40 cm tall, with a spread at least equivalent. Its leaves are ovate and pointed, thick and covered in white hairs. They are medium-green with a greyish appearance due to the down covering them.
Between May-June and September, this plant produces deep pink three-petalled flowers, which typically bloom in the morning. Indoors, its evergreen foliage remains decorative year-round, provided it is given the right growing conditions. It is not very hardy; it cannot tolerate temperatures below 4°C and is best grown in sheltered spots away from cold draughts.

Indoors, Tradescantia sillamontana should not be exposed to midday sun behind glass, as this could scorch its delicate foliage. A spot near an east- or west-facing window is ideal. This spiderwort prefers well-drained soil, composed of light potting mix and sand to avoid waterlogging. Water moderately, allowing the substrate to dry out between waterings. In winter, reduce watering as the plant enters a dormant phase. It will thrive in well-lit rooms such as a living room, kitchen, or conservatory.

White Velvet works equally well in hanging displays or traditional pots, offering many decorative possibilities. When suspended, its trailing stems exude elegance. In pots, it forms a dense, compact clump that fits easily on a shelf or coffee table. To enhance its foliage, pair it with plants like Spider Plant, Asparagus Fern, and Indoor Begonias to play with contrasts in shapes and textures.

Location

Avoid direct sunlight behind a very sunny window, as the magnifying effect can burn its leaves. A spot near an east or west-facing window would be more suitable. You can also place it on a sunny windowsill, but only if the window has a sheer curtain. This plant is sensitive to excess water.

Maintenance and care

Watering tips

Water when the top 3 cm of the growing medium is dry. Reduce watering in winter. Avoid misting the foliage.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Preferably repot in spring, in April, every year or every 2 years, depending on the growth of the plant.
Use a mix of light potting compost with perlite or sand to improve drainage.
Use a liquid fertiliser for green plants (NPK 10-10-10) diluted by half, applied every 4 to 6 weeks during the growth period (spring and summer).

Houseplant care

Tradescantia sillamontana requires minimal maintenance. Remove dried leaves. Renew ageing plants by propagation through stem cuttings, which is very easy to succeed with.
Prune the stems regularly to encourage denser growth and maintain a compact shape.

Disease and pest advice

In case of an aphid infestation, prepare a mild soapy water solution and spray it on the affected areas. Then rinse with clean water.
