Description

Light perennials, highly valued in gardens, columbines require a light, humus-rich soil that does not lack moisture, where they colonise the ground with their spontaneous self seeding.

A very beautiful species with finely cut, light bluish green foliage, topped with large, highly fragrant flowers with very fine spurs, cream-white sepals and light yellow petals that harmonize with the foliage. Superb in the slightly shaded border of the garden.

Planting and care

Plant Aquilegia fragrans preferably in spring or early autumn, when the soil is cool and the plant can establish itself without stress. Choose a bright but not scorching position: morning sun or light shade from a clear woodland edge suit it very well. The soil should be loose, humus-bearing, moist in spring, but perfectly drained in winter; a garden soil lightened with well-rotted compost and a little fine gravel will suit it better than compact clay or dry, poor ground. Water regularly in the first year, especially in spring and during the first warm spells, then only in dry periods once the root system is well established. Cut off faded flowers if you wish to avoid spontaneous seedlings; leave a few to go to seed if you want it to self-sow. Avoid moving mature plants, as columbines do not re-establish well once settled.
