I remember a very beautiful bulb, but the slugs ate it.

Description

Arisaema sikokianum is perhaps the most beautiful species among arisaemas.

Originally from southern Japan, from the island of Shikoku, the Arisaema sikokianum is a delicate species to cultivate but undoubtedly the most beautiful when in bloom.

In bloom in early summer, this arisaema reaches a height of 40 to 50cm (16 to 20in); its spathe (the name given to the flowers in this family) is black at the base, topped with a striated "hood" of brown, green and white, revealing a large white cloud-shaped spadix.

Decorative, its leaves are composed of 3 to 5 ovate leaflets, light green in colour, sometimes speckled with silver. Its corms (bulbs) produce small bulblets and spread slowly in the soil. It takes 3-4 years to obtain a beautiful cluster of 5-7 flowers.

From the same family as arums, this plant is nicknamed "Cobra lily" due to its upright spathe resembling a strong mimicry with this reptile, is still little used in gardens. Originating mainly from Asia, there are currently over 150 species. More than half of these species live in temperate zones and are, therefore, easily cultivable in our climate. They like wooded environments, humus-bearing and cool soils, but never waterlogged.

Plant Arisaema sikokianum in a cool environment with bamboo (Fargesia), hostas, and ferns.

Planting and care

Arisaemas are sturdy plants as long as their needs are met. They prefer soil that is light, fresh, well-draining, and rich in humus. During summer, the soil should not dry out, but during winter, it should not become waterlogged to avoid rotting. Arisaemas should be planted in partial shade, preferably on the west side of large trees. To make the soil heavy, add 1/3 leaf compost and 1/3 non-limestone sand. Mix with your topsoil to create a substrate that is 20-25cm (8-10in) deep and wide. Plant the bulb at a depth of 6-8cm (2-3in) on a bed of perlite and cover it with a substrate to prevent winter rotting. In pots, use earthen pots that are wider than they are tall, filled with a substrate that is half perlite or vermiculite and preferably leaf compost. Bury the bulb 6-8cm (2-3in) underground and keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Store your pot in a frost-free environment during winter, and maintain a slightly cool temperature. A few drops of water every 2 weeks will suffice. Resume watering only in early spring, around April, as soon as the bulbs emerge.
