The Lin-leaved Aster, or Aster linariifolius, is a perennial plant that charms with its generous late summer flowering and its fine foliage. Ideal for adding colour at the end of the season, this plant is particularly appreciated for its cold and drought resistance, its strong stems and healthy foliage. It finds a place in many gardens, in wildflower beds or large flower borders. It is a trouble-free perennial in well-drained soils, perfect in natural or dry gardens.
Aster linariifolius belongs to the Asteraceae family. This species is known by two Latin names: Aster linariifolius and Ionactis linariifolia. The latter name, Ionactis linariifolia, is the currently accepted botanical name. This plant is native to the temperate regions of North America, where it naturally grows in dry meadows and rocky soils. It is a moderately growing perennial that forms compact clumps, reaching a height of 30 to 50 cm and a width of about 30 cm. Its habit is upright, with slender, reddish, stiff stems, covered with linear greyish-green foliage, reminiscent of flax leaves.
The flowers of the Lin-leaved Aster are small, measuring 1 to 2 cm in diameter and resemble small stars. They appear in large numbers from late August to October depending on the climate, in shades of blue-violet to mauve-pink, attracting many pollinators, especially bees and butterflies. The flowers are grouped in loose corymbs, creating a beautiful colourful effect in beds. Its foliage persists late into the season. It loses its foliage in winter and goes dormant until spring returns. This aster is highly resistant to harsh weather conditions. It tolerates temperatures dropping as low as -20°C and adapts well to poor, rocky, well-drained soils. This species is not very susceptible to diseases and pests.
Ionactis linariifolia is perfect for creating colourful borders and beds in natural style gardens or in flowering meadows. This plant can be used in groups to form colourful clumps or in combination with other perennials. Choose, for example, Echinacea purpurea, Rudbeckia fulgida 'Goldsturm', Sedum spectabile 'Septemberglut' and Nepeta faassenii 'Cat's Pajamas'. Used in rockeries or dry gardens, the Lin-leaved Aster brings a touch of lightness and finesse with its delicate foliage and starry flowering. Wherever it is planted, it offers a beautiful late flowering while many other plants have finished blooming.

Botanical data
Ionactis linariifolia is an easy plant to grow in full sun in well-drained, acidic to slightly alkaline soil. It prefers a light, sandy or rocky soil, and tolerates poor and dry soils well once well rooted. To encourage abundant flowering, a sunny exposure is recommended, although the plant can also tolerate partial shade. Resistant to cold temperatures down to -20°C, this perennial is also relatively disease and pest-resistant. Moderate watering is sufficient, especially once the plant is well established.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
