Description

The 'Yellow and Red' Coreopsis from the 'UpTick' series, with its large flowers resembling sun-yellow daisies with a dark red centre, possesses all the qualities that have earned this new hybrid series multiple awards. This exceptional perennial stands out for its notably broad flowers, which bloom generously and for an extended period of time. It boasts good disease resistance, as well as compact and vigorous growth. It thrives in sunny locations in moist but well-drained soil and can be planted in both borders and pots. Its flowers are perfect for bouquets and attractive to garden bees.

The 'Uptick Yellow and Red' Coreopsis belongs to the Asteraceae family. This herbaceous perennial plant with rhizomes quickly forms a shrub 20 cm (8in) tall, with a diameter of 30 cm (12in), that does not need staking. Flowering occurs from June to September and sometimes even longer. The flowers, arranged in heads, measuring up to 7 cm (3in) in diameter, are solitary and borne on slightly hairy stems rising 30-35 cm (12-14in) from the ground, just above the foliage. The outer ligules, or petals, have a dark red base and a bright lemon-yellow tip. They surround a central disk of yellow-orange colour. The foliage, a beautiful vibrant green, is deciduous: it dies in autumn and regrows in spring. The leaves, opposite, lanceolate, entire, sometimes incised at the base, almost sessile (without petiole), measure about 10 cm (4in) long. This perennial spreads a little through its rhizomes.

The 'Uptick Yellow and Red' coreopsis is a sun-loving plant that is easy to grow but dislikes winter moisture and heavy soils. This versatile perennial plant will thrive in flower pots and look stunning in a slightly raised border or on a slope. It can be combined in an herbaceous border with wallflowers, poppies, blue or purple perennial salvias, and campanulas. This plant blooms continuously from the first year. For a beautiful summer display, in the ground or a large pot with very little water, it can be paired with Calamintha glandulosa and Nepeta 'Dawn to Dusk'. It is also a beautiful flower for summer bouquets.

Planting and care

The 'Uptick Yellow and Red' coreopsis is an easy-to-grow plant, but it doesn't tolerate winter humidity and heavy soils. This plant requires full sun to flower well. It prefers light and fresh soil, porous, always well-drained, slightly acidic, neutral, and slightly chalky. Under such conditions, these plants flower and live longer. To encourage repeat flowering, remove the faded flowers regularly and then again in July to promote autumn flowering, which will, in turn, extend the life of the plant. Rejuvenate exhausted shrubs by dividing them every 3 years or so.
