Planting and care
Plant Digitalis mertonensis in spring or autumn, in soil loosened to a depth of 25 cm and enriched with mature compost. Place the collar at soil level and space the plants 35 to 40 cm apart. Light partial shade gives the best results; full sun suits cooler regions if the soil retains moisture, while light shade protects flowering in southern France. Water during establishment and whenever the soil dries out deeply during growth. A 5 cm organic mulch, renewed in spring around the rosette, helps maintain some moisture. Avoid waterlogged soils in winter and fertilisers too rich in nitrogen. Divide the clumps in early spring or just after flowering, every two or three years, to keep vigorous plants. Watch for slugs on young rosettes, aphids and powdery mildew.
