More information

This white form of the Virginia Gyroselle has been awarded an Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society. A superb perennial, little known, which bears floral stems from which gracefully hang small bell-shaped flowers, long pedunculate. But this little plant also stands out for a particularly short vegetation cycle, and a somewhat delicate culture. It requires a humus-bearing soil, consistently moist, neutral to acidic, but fertile and a position in partial shade.

Description

The Dodecatheon meadia 'Album' is a variety with white flowers of the Virginia Cowslip. This little-known plant develops a rosette of leaves reminiscent of primroses, and bears floral stems gracefully hanging with superb white flowers with yellow and brown centres, in the shape of inverted bells, on long peduncles. Enchanting, this small perennial stands out with a particularly short vegetation cycle and a somewhat delicate culture. It is a precious little gem to be grown indispensably in humus-bearing soil, remaining moist, neutral to acidic, but fertile, and in a semi-shaded or brightly shaded area.

The Dodecatheon meadia is a perennial herbaceous plant of the family Primulaceae, native to the eastern United States, from Pennsylvania to Texas and Louisiana. The 'Album' variety forms in spring a rosette of pale green, oval to obovate leaves, obtuse, sometimes slightly toothed at the edges, with red hues towards the base, measuring 10 to 20 cm in length. In spring, from April to June depending on the climate, 15 to 45 cm floral stems emerge from the rosettes, carrying at their tips a small cluster of 10 to 15 flowers. Their white petals completely turned back reveal prominent stamens with yellow-orange anthers. Less than three months pass between the appearance of foliage and entering dormancy in summer.

The Dodecatheon are rarely used in gardens. Nevertheless, the spectacle of their flowering deserves an attempt to tame them in a mountain garden or in the shelter of a woodland. These plants of humid shade or alpine meadows thrive in soil rich in humus, without limestone, under the foliage of trees. The Dodecatheon meadia 'Album' accompanies astilbes, hostas, rodgersias, or bleeding hearts. As its foliage disappears early in summer, and it is preferable not to disturb it, but also not to forget it's there, they can be paired with small ground covers, like Chrysosplenium oppositifolium, to prevent the ground from remaining bare for a long period.

Planting and care

Very hardy, Dodecatheons 'Album' thrive in acid to neutral, cool to moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Plant them in early autumn or March. They can be planted in soil enriched with peat and leaf compost, making sure it never dries out. They thrive in semi-shade or even light shade. After flowering, these plants often require a period of rest without watering (hence a well-drained soil) and hate being transplanted. Young leaves are prey to slugs and snails, so be sure to protect them.
