Our range of summer heathers. Among the many heathers that exist, it is mainly Calluna, or summer heathers, that flower from July to October. The main summer heather is the common heather, or ling (Calluna vulgaris), which produces small spikes of tubular, pink, white or purple flowers. The 'Dark Beauty' variety offers bright crimson red flowers, and its foliage turns bronze in winter. 'Spring Torch’ is a low bush with pastel flowering, ideal for borders or rockeries. Erica vagans, the Cornish heather, also flowers in summer. Its hybrid Erica x griffithsii ‘Valerie Griffiths’ with golden foliage is covered in pale pink bells between July and October. Rarer in cultivation, but very beautiful, Erica terminalis, the Corsican heather, flowers pink in summer, on calcareous soil.
These summer heathers mostly prefer acidic, light and well-drained soils, in full sun. Lightly prune the spent flower stems to maintain a compact habit and promote the following year's flowering.
