Description
Native to north-western Turkey, extending to the Caucasus and north-eastern Greece, the Oriental Hellebore is a perennial plant that brightens shaded areas of your garden in winter. This mix provides an assortment of colours, from white to dark red, including pink and speckled varieties. It is a hardy plant that can withstand temperatures as low as -15°C. It is formed of basal, palmate, slightly toothed, dark green and glossy leaves. These evergreen leaves are 30 to 40cm long, composed of 7 to 9 leaflets.
At maturity, the Oriental Hellebore reaches 40cm in height and spreads 30cm. From January to March, a cluster of single, 5 to 7cm diameter flowers forms. These are cup-shaped, nodding flowers. The Hellebore has a bushy habit. It does not like to be moved once established, and young shoots take a little while to flower.
This toxic plant should be handled with care. It is suitable as cut flowers and for borders, edging, or even containers, etc. Over time, Hellebore flowers do not fade like most other flowers but instead dry out.

Helleborus Orientalis grows in most soils that are rich and neutral in partial or light shade, in a position sheltered from the wind. Plant from early autumn to spring to flower from January to March. It thrives in soil that has been worked deeply and mixed with a quantity of organic matter. To feed, use bone meal or another organic fertiliser. In acidic soil, add a little lime. Water the young plants well after planting and then add a 2 to 5cm layer of mulch. Regularly remove faded leaves. Cut back most of the leaves to make the flowers stand out. Be careful not to plant the young plants too close together to encourage their development. Hellebore does not like stagnant water; this risks causing it to rot.
