Description

Limonium perezii 'Indie' is a statice native to the Canary Islands with limited hardiness, but excellent heat and drought resistance. This charming plant, often grown as an annual, offers a beautiful and long-lasting flowering period with airy panicles. Its vivid violet-blue flowers with papery calyces last exceptionally well in dried bouquets. Use it to lighten up your border plantings and add a Mediterranean touch to your container arrangements.

Limonium perezii 'Indie' belongs to the Plumbaginaceae family. It is commonly called statice, sea lavender or marsh rosemary. Native to the Canary Islands, particularly Tenerife, the wild species is endemic to coastal areas exposed to wind and salt spray. It has become naturalised in regions with similar climates, such as certain coastal areas of California. It is a perennial plant, but due to its sensitivity to frost (-5°C), it is grown as an annual in regions with cold winters.
The cultivar 'Indie' is a specific horticultural selection, resulting from breeding work by the company Benary, which improved the wild species to obtain more compact and colourful inflorescences and good disease resistance. This plant has a rounded, clump-forming habit. It reaches a height of 55-60 cm and a spread of 35 cm. In pots, its dimensions may be slightly reduced, depending on the container size. The foliage consists of leathery, ovate to rounded, fairly dark green basal leaves measuring up to 30 cm long, arranged in a rosette. The sturdy, upright flowering stems rise above the foliage.

Flowering begins 12 to 16 weeks after sowing. It extends from March-April to September-October, depending on the sowing date and the cultivation method (in a greenhouse or outdoors). The small flowers (approximately 4 to 6 mm in diameter) feature calyces with a papery texture in a strong lavender colour and white corollas. These flowers, grouped into branched panicles, are particularly prized for dried bouquets due to their colour retention. This flowering attracts numerous pollinators. The fruits are small, one-seeded capsules, partially enclosed by the persistent calyx. The root system takes the form of a woody rhizome; it gives the plant some drought resistance, but makes the transplanting operation a little delicate. The foliage is evergreen in mild climates, but may become deciduous in case of frost.

Statice perezii 'Indie' will brighten up rockeries, flower beds, borders and patio containers. Its airy lavender-blue inflorescences form a beautiful combination with airy and colourful Verbena bonariensis ‘Lollipop’, pink-plumed Muhlenbergia capillaris, or late-flowering Sedum spectabile ‘Brilliant’, to create a dynamic contrast. In containers, you can pair them with hardy Mediterranean plants like Santolina chamaecyparissus or Convolvulus cneorum, to create long-lasting scenes, even under a scorching sun.

Planting and care

Sow Limonium perezii 'Indie' seeds in February/March in a greenhouse, propagator or a heated room indoors, on the surface of good compost and cover with vermiculite or a thin layer of compost. Germination takes 7 to 14 days at 18-24°C.

Transplant sufficiently developed young plants into trays or pots, spacing them 5 cm apart, at a slightly lower temperature. Acclimatise them gradually to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting out after the last frosts, in deep, well-drained soil. Space plants 30 cm apart.

Statice are genuinely easy plants to grow. They appreciate sun and well-drained, sandy, dry soil. They tolerate sea spray and strong winds, making them perfect candidates for coastal gardens. Plant in spring, in warmed soil. Once established, simply remove faded flowers to stimulate new blooms. At the end of the season, if you wish to try to preserve the statice, cut back the stems. You can overwinter them frost-free in a bright, unheated room.

Like many Mediterranean plants, statice is very drought-resistant, but it needs water to flower well in summer. In its native region, it flowers before the arrival of summer drought. This plant does not appreciate humidity, which makes it susceptible to Botrytis, grey mould.
