I received my order yesterday and what a surprise it was to receive, in the batch of three Garnet Penstemon plants, a young plant that was half dead and dry while the others were perfect. The bucket was completely dry!! I think there is some effort to be made! The customer pays to have healthy plants and not dry stuff that we don't even know if it will survive! I am really disappointed!

Description

The Penstemon 'Garnet', also known as 'Andenken an Friedrich Hahn', is a semi-evergreen perennial that produces pretty small garnet red flowers.

The Penstemon 'Garnet' forms a bushy plant consisting of narrow leaves that are 9 cm (4in) long. The habit of this perennial is spreading and can reach a height and width of 1m (3ft).

The flowers are elongated, bell-shaped and deep carmine red, blooming in July/August. The flowering period, which is quite remarkable, lasts for two months.

This perennial is quite hardy and easy to grow. It thrives in sunny locations with well-drained soil.

Planting and care

Plant the Penstemon in fresh, well-drained soil in a sunny position (possibly partial shade in the south). Add a bit of sand to the planting soil, as the penstemon is sensitive to excessive winter moisture associated with freezing temperatures. Apply a base fertiliser and cut off the faded stems to prolong flowering. At the end of the flowering period, prune your plants and mulch them in very cold regions or mountainous areas, as penstemons do not tolerate very strong winter frosts well.

Care

Pruning instructions In early spring, once the risk of frost has passed, it is recommended to clean the stump of the plant by pruning it to 20 cm (8in). This will encourage branching and flowering. During the flowering period, it is important to remove faded flowers by cutting the floral spikes at the axil of new shoots (between the stem and the leaves). This will promote a second wave of flowers and help maintain a healthy, compact plant.
