Description

The Primula denticulata 'Prom Deep Rose' is a new variety of Himalayan primrose distinguished by its compact habit, abundant spherical flowering, and striking deep rose colour with red undertones. This plant produces several upright flower stems in spring, rising above a rosette of bright green leaves. Very attractive in pots, cool rockeries, or borders, its flowers are perfect as cut flowers. This hardy perennial thrives in partial shade and prefers humus-rich, cool, or even moist soil.

Like all primulas, the Primula dentata Prom Deep Rose belongs to the primrose family. Its ancestor is a perennial plant native to the forests and meadows of the Himalayas, Tibet, and Nepal. The flowering of this variety occurs from March to May: several flower stems 15 to 30 cm tall emerge from the basal foliage. Each bears a spherical inflorescence 5-6 cm in diameter, formed of numerous small magenta flowers with a tight yellow eye. The foliage forms a rosette of elongated, spatulate, ovate leaves 15 to 25 cm long, with dentate edges, which fully develop after flowering. These leaves are green with a white underside. They are deciduous and disappear in winter.

The Primula denticulata Prom Deep Rose boasts excellent hardiness. This plant which dies back in autumn is well-suited to cool rockeries, borders, beds, or semi-natural settings. It pairs beautifully with many spring bulbs (tulips, daffodils, hyacinths...), astilbes, hostas, pansies, violets, or small ferns. It also makes superb, highly decorative cut flowers.

Warning - Note the presence of primin, which may cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.

Planting and care

Plant the Primulas denticulata Prom Deep Rose in a sunny or partially shaded location in autumn or spring. Place them in ordinary, deep, fairly rich, moist to wet but light, not too clayey soil. Avoid any overly chalky and compact soil. This plant will be easy to grow under these conditions. Every year or every other year, separate the new peripheral plants that appear from the original one.
