Description

Primula acaulis 'Frilly Bicolour Salmon & Peach' is a charming garden primrose, ideal for brightening winter with its frilled, changeable flowers in soft, warm tones. This early cultivar flowers from December through February, forming pretty green cushions from which Frilly flowers with salmon, peach and yellow petals, emerge. Its generous flowering, in a unique colour, will be welcome in the heart of winter in borders, planters or pot compositions.

Primula 'Frilly Bicolour Salmon & Peach' is a small perennial plant from the Primulaceae family, derived from the native species Primula vulgaris (Primula acaulis). The 'Frilly' series brings together stemless primroses with ruffled petals, which stand out for their slightly retro style. These cultivars have been selected for their flowers with well-defined frilled edges, often slightly scented, and available in a range of soft or intense colours. They combine resistance, good performance in winter and a pronounced decorative effect. Flowering from December to April, depending on the variety, primroses from the Frilly series fit well in beds and as seasonal decoration.
Primula 'Frilly Bicolour Salmon & Peach' forms a pretty clump of lush, fresh green foliage within a few weeks, 15 to 20 cm high and 20-25 cm wide. They develop rosettes of evergreen leaves in winter. These leaves are spatulate, embossed and veined. The plant produces medium-sized flowers, grouped in generous clusters at the centre of the foliage.
Botanically, it is a perennial, but it is frequently cultivated as an annual. In open ground or in pots, it appreciates bright but not scorching locations, in partial shade or gentle sun, and damp to moist soils, rich in organic matter, without excess stagnant water.

Primrose 'Frilly Bicolour Salmon & Peach' can also be used temporarily indoors, in a bright, cool room (12 to 16 °C), away from heat sources. It will offer elegant flowering for several weeks. To prolong its splendour, remove faded flowers and water moderately.

The garden primrose is an easy plant that brings charm to the greyest winters. Do not hesitate to mix colours and flowering periods to create very floriferous borders with it. You can also plant it under the cover of bushes or in planters on a balcony. You can mix it with pansies Mariposa F1 Peach Shades and early bulbs like snowdrops and mini daffodils. The leaves and flowers are edible and can be consumed raw or cooked.

Planting and care

Frilly Salmon & Peach primroses should be planted in containers and planters or directly in open ground in finely prepared and enriched soil as soon as possible upon receipt. If the intended location is not yet ready or conditions are unfavourable for planting, you can grow them on in pots for 4 to 6 weeks. Their hardiness generally does not exceed -10/-12°C in well-drained soil.

For containers and planters, use a good, light and well-draining flowering plant compost (such as geranium compost) enriched with clay and slow-release fertiliser. The top of the root ball should be level with the compost. Water thoroughly at planting and during the following weeks, as plug plants can dry out quickly. However, be cautious of overwatering! Ensure containers have drainage holes and empty the saucer 10 minutes after watering. Remember to water even during winter if there is no rain or if the container is placed in a sheltered location. Do not water during frost periods.

Being highly floriferous and fast-growing, primroses are greedy plants. From the resumption of growth in late February/early March, and throughout the flowering period, apply a liquid fertiliser for flowering plants containing iron and trace elements 1 to 2 times per week with the watering water. Remove faded flowers to encourage new flowering. Once flowering has finished, container-grown plants can be replanted in partial shade in the garden.
