Description

Primula acaulis ‘Frilly White’ is a particularly early-flowering primrose, ideal for bringing light to the garden or home from the first cold spells. From November onwards, it is adorned with large frilly white flowers, gathered in generous clusters. This variety forms abundant and highly decorative pot displays during the end-of-year festivities. In a planter, on a balcony, as a border in a flowerbed, or in a pot, this primrose prefers damp, bright locations sheltered from hard frosts.

Primula ‘Frilly White’ is a hybrid primrose derived from Primula vulgaris, also known as the stemless primrose. This cultivar belongs to the 'Frilly' series, which includes original varieties with finely crinkled petals, in a somewhat "old-fashioned" style. These primroses are distinguished by their often slightly fragrant flowering, and by soft or bold colours depending on the variety.

'Frilly White' stands out for its immaculate, pure and luminous white flowering, barely accentuated by a small green and yellow heart. It is also characterised by a particularly early flowering period, beginning as early as November and lasting for several weeks, often until January. Its flowers are large for a primrose (over 5 cm), with corollas gathered into dense, generous clusters, held just above thick, textured dark green foliage. The plant forms a compact but vigorous clump, 15 to 20 cm tall and 20 to 25 cm wide.

The ‘Frilly White’ primrose is a perennial in regions with mild winters, but it is often grown as an annual plant for its long winter flowering period. Indoors, it can be used temporarily in a cool, bright room (ideally between 12 and 16 °C). It can be included on the Christmas or New Year's Eve table. To ensure long-lasting flowering, remove spent flowers regularly and water it consistently, without waterlogging the compost.

Primula ‘Frilly White’, with its understated and refined appearance, pairs easily with other more colourful primroses, with pastel-coloured pansies, or with early spring bulbs such as hyacinths and botanical daffodils to create soft and contrasting winter scenes. Its combination with the double red primrose 'Belarina Valentine' is particularly striking on a festive table.

Planting and care

Plant 'Frilly White' primroses in containers and planters or directly in open ground in finely prepared and enriched soil, as soon as possible upon receipt. If the intended location is not yet ready or conditions are unfavourable for planting, you can grow them on in pots for 4 to 6 weeks. Their hardiness rarely exceeds -10/-12°C in well-drained soil.

For containers and planters, use a good, light and well-draining flowering plant compost (such as geranium compost) enriched with clay and slow-release fertiliser. The top of the root ball should be level with the compost. Water thoroughly at planting and during the following weeks, as plug plants can dry out quickly. However, be careful not to overwater! Ensure containers have drainage holes and empty the saucer 10 minutes after watering. Remember to water even during winter if there is no rain or if the container is placed in a sheltered location. Do not water during frost periods.

Being highly floriferous and fast-growing, primroses are greedy plants. From the resumption of growth in late February/early March, and throughout the flowering period, apply a liquid fertiliser for flowering plants containing iron and trace elements 1 to 2 times per week with the watering water. Remove faded flowers to encourage new flowering. Once flowering has finished, container-grown plants can be replanted in partial shade in the garden.
