Description

The Primula acaulis Rambo F1 'White' is a new stemless primrose that brightens up the garden in the middle of winter, starting in January. Its open and flat flowers measure 6 cm (2in) in diameter and are pure white, with a beautiful orange pattern in the centre that resembles the shape of the inflorescence. Sturdy and vigorous, this variety blooms generously and early in the winter, on a cushion of dark green leaves. Plant this primrose at the edge of a flower bed or pathway, or in a planter on the balcony, in partial shade and in soil that retains moisture.

The Primula acaulis, also known as Primula vulgaris, is a perennial herbaceous plant from the primrose family, a wild species found in our meadows and woodlands. 'White' is a recent hybrid that stands out for its vigor and large flowers. It is a floriferous plant that forms a beautiful clump of lush foliage in just a few months, reaching a height of 15 cm (6in) and a width of about 20 to 25 cm (8 to 10in). It develops more or less evergreen rosettes of spatulate, wavy and veined leaves, ranging from medium green to dark green.

The Rambo F1 'White' stemless primrose is tough, not intimidated by the extremes of the climate, and easy to grow. Queen of winter balconies and pathway borders, it is planted in a way that it can be seen from the house, as it is the first to bloom at a time when one may not always feel like going outside. This plant sets the stage for the other primroses to come, and then for the forget-me-nots, daffodils, Siberian squill, and Crocus. Under the cover of shrubs, in partial shade, they illuminate flower beds, rockeries, and short grass meadows, among the snowdrops and violets.

They have smilar benefits to the common primrose and the oxlip: the flowers have soothing and calming properties, and are used in expectorant preparations. The leaves help prevent bruising, and the entire plant (especially the root) has analgesic, anti-spasmodic, diuretic, and expectorant properties.

Planting and care

Primroses are planted in pots and containers or directly in the ground in finely prepared and enriched soil. Plant them as soon as possible upon receipt, in September-October or March-April. If the planned location is not ready yet or the conditions are unfavorable for planting, you can grow them in pots for 4 to 6 weeks.

In pots and containers, use a good potting soil for flowering plants (geranium-type potting soil) enriched with clay and slow-release fertiliser, lightweight and well-draining. The top of the plug should be level with the soil. Water generously at planting and in the following weeks, as plug plants can dry out quickly. However, be cautious of excessive water! Make sure to use containers with drainage holes and empty the saucer 10 minutes after watering. Remember to water even during winter if it doesn't rain or if the container is placed in a sheltered location. Do not water during freezing periods.

Highly floriferous and fast-growing, primroses are greedy plants. As soon as growth resumes, in late February or early March, and throughout the flowering period, apply a liquid fertiliser for flowering plants containing iron and trace elements 1 to 2 times a week with watering. Remove faded flowers to promote new blooming. Once flowering is over, potted plants can be replanted in the garden in semi-shade.
