More information

A rhizomatous perennial woodland plant similar to lily of the valley that spreads as ground cover even among the roots of trees. Its spring flowering, made up of spikes of small white flowers, emerges from a low carpet of large shiny leaves, then gives way to decorative red fruits in autumn. Description

Maianthemum bilobium var. kamtschaticum is part of a group of perennial rhizomatous plants close to lily of the valley and Solomon's seal, also known as smilacina. This bilobium var. kamtschaticum species forms an intense green low carpet of large shiny leaves, which adorns itself in spring with short clusters of white flowers, followed by red fruits that are decorative in autumn. Native to the undergrowth of East Asia, this very hardy and undemanding perennial slowly spreads through its rhizomes, eventually forming a lush and low-maintenance ground cover. Ideal on the edge of the undergrowth or under large deciduous trees.

Maianthemum bilobium var. kamtschaticum belongs to the Asparagaceae family. It is native to the easternmost regions of Russia, China, and Korea. Its natural habitat corresponds to wooded areas. It is a perennial herbaceous plant with rhizomes, whose deciduous vegetation starts in spring and disappears in winter. While its establishment is a bit slow, it eventually forms a beautiful clump of leafy stems 25 to 35cm (10 to 14in) high and at least 50cm (20in) wide, depending on the richness of the soil it grows in. Once established, it requires no maintenance except for occasional watering in very dry weather.

From its stump arise segmented stems in spring, with quadrangular cross-sections adorned with wide, heart-shaped or sagittate leaves with undulate margins. They are glossy and bright green on the upper side, villous on the underside, traversed by prominent parallel veins. They are arranged alternately and have a thin petiole. Flowering takes place in May and June. At the tips of the stems, beautiful white spikes measuring 10 to 15cm (4 to 6in) unfold, adorned with numerous small flowers with 4 petals and prominent stamens, measuring 6mm in diameter. After pollination, small round berries form, which are initially green before turning red and glossy when ripe. This plant has the same toxicity as lily of the valley.

Maianthemum bilobium var. kamtschaticum is an easy and durable plant, adaptable to many regions. It grows in any non-calcareous soil, even clayey soil, that is not too dry to moist. It flowers in both shade and morning sun. This perennial, which is not hindered by the competition of tree and shrub roots, is valuable for landscaping these areas of the garden, which are often difficult to vegetate. Periwinkles, Geranium macrorrhizum, hellebores, and toad lilies (Tricyrtis), will precede, accompany, or take over its flowering in dappled light. It can be slightly invasive when conditions are favourable.

Planting and care

Plant Maianthemum kamtschaticum in shade or partial shade in any non-limestone soil, with a neutral or acidic tendency. It prefers clayey or humus-rich soils that remain slightly moist in summer. It is very robust and resistant to cold. Just make sure to water it regularly during the first year of cultivation, especially during dry periods, to promote establishment. Once established, it can thrive in a moderate climate (not too dry in summer) and tolerate the root competition from trees and bushes that dry out the soil in summer.
