More information

A fastigiate variety with a very regular habit, fairly rapid growth, and dense foliage of short, dark green needles. Its narrow, dense branches better withstand snow accumulation and are more suitable for confined spaces. This conifer adds a touch of elegance and height to the garden, even in urban settings. It is a hardy, robust plant that is easy to grow in well-drained, but not too dry soil.

Description

Picea abies 'Cupressina' is a variety of Norway spruce distinguished by its fastigiate habit and moderate growth. This conifer is well-suited to snowy winters, alpine climates, urban conditions, and modest-sized plots. It presents a slender, well-defined silhouette adorned with very dense foliage, attractive even in winter.

Norway Spruce 'Cupressina' is a horticultural selection of the common Norway spruce. The species, Picea abies, also known as the Norway spruce or red fir, is an evergreen conifer belonging to the Pinaceae family. Native to northern Europe, particularly Scandinavia, it naturally exhibits a typical conical, pyramidal habit and can reach heights of 30 m. Traditionally used as a Christmas tree in Europe, it thrives in well-drained, moist soils and is unfazed by very low temperatures. The 'Cupressina' spruce typically grows to 10 m in height with a 3 m spread at 20-25 years of age. Its growth is rapid initially, but slows with time. It develops a straight trunk and narrow conical foliage. The bark is reddish-brown, initially covered in fine scales, turning grey-brown with thicker, peeling scales as it matures. The branches are nearly vertical, with short, stiff, densely packed shoots. The sharp, 1-2 cm long needles are arranged in a brush-like fashion on the shoots. They are dark green and evergreen. Picea abies is a monoecious species, meaning male and female cones appear on different parts of the same tree: the oval and orange-yellow male cones develop on one-year-old shoots, while the female cones emerge at the shoot tips. Initially upright and green to reddish, the female cones later turn brown and pendulous. These scaly cones measure 10-18 cm long. After releasing small brown seeds, they fall to the ground in winter. The spruce's root system is shallow and running, making mature specimens difficult to transplant and particularly vulnerable to wind.

Picea abies 'Cupressina' is an excellent substitute for the Mediterranean cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) in cold, humid, or alpine climates. This conifer works well as a standalone specimen or in rows to create a tall green screen. Its vertical silhouette stands out beautifully on a lawn, at the centre of a large bed, or near a swimming pool. For companion planting, consider creeping conifers or ground-cover plants such as violets (Viola) and periwinkles. The striking architectural qualities of conifers naturally lend themselves to contemporary garden design, which emphasises form, silhouette, and texture. They pair well with heathers and mahonias. The key is to play with volumes and colours.

Planting and care

Plant Picea abies 'Cupressina' from September to November and from February to June in deep, well-drained, light, preferably neutral soil, which can be moist to occasionally dry. Choose a very sunny or partially shaded spot, sheltered from prevailing winds. Soak the root balls thoroughly before planting. Add organic matter at planting time and water generously for the first few years, as well as during prolonged dry spells. Apply a special conifer fertiliser every year in April and hoe the soil in summer. This extremely hardy conifer dislikes heavy, waterlogged soil in winter. It detests extreme heat and cannot tolerate Mediterranean summers.
