Description

Picea abies 'Krasickiana' is a cultivar of the Norway spruce, distinguished by its remarkable weeping habit. This tall, relatively narrow tree features pendulous branches and exhibits rapid growth in its early years. Its dense, dark green foliage remains attractive even in winter. This magnificent weeping fir is particularly striking near a pond, where its silhouette reflects in the water.

Picea abies 'Krasickiana' was discovered in Poland by Mr. Krasicki in his forests near Lesko and first introduced to the horticultural market by Feliks Rożyński in 1908. The species, Picea abies, also known as the Norway spruce or red fir, is an evergreen conifer belonging to the Pinaceae family, native to northern Europe. In its natural habitat, it typically has a conical, pyramidal habit and can reach heights of 30 m. This species is traditionally used as a Christmas tree in Europe. It thrives in well-drained, moist soils and is very cold-tolerant. Picea abies 'Krasickiana' can eventually reach an impressive height of 30 m, with a spread of 4 to 5 m at the base. Its growth is rapid in the early years, reaching 5 to 6 m in ten years. From a young age, 'Krasickiana' stands out with its long branches that trail gracefully to the ground, giving the tree a highly decorative silhouette. In older specimens, it is mainly the secondary branches that are trailing. The foliage consists of stiff, short, prickly needles in a rich, dark green, arranged radially around the shoots, resembling a bottlebrush. Mature specimens may produce reproductive organs. The pendulous and oblong female cones measure 10 to 15 cm long and are purplish, while the male cones are red and turn yellow with pollen. The bark is initially smooth and light grey. Over time, it becomes rougher and scaly, taking on a darker grey-brown hue as the tree ages. The root system of spruces is shallow and running, making them difficult to transplant when mature and particularly vulnerable to wind.

Weeping spruce 'Krasickiana', with its exceptional ornamental qualities, will become the star of a park or large garden. Its silhouette stands out beautifully against a clear sky. It is unmatched near a water feature, alongside the romantic weeping willow or weeping ash, for example. The striking architectural qualities of conifers naturally lend themselves to contemporary garden design, which highlights the aesthetics of forms, silhouettes, and textures. These plants, with their reassuring permanence, shape the landscape. They pair well with mahonias, heathers, or ornamental grasses, which share a complementary temperament.

Planting and care

Plant Picea abies 'Krasickiana' from September to November and from February to May in deep, well-drained, light soil that retains moisture. This conifer does not tolerate limestone well, dislikes drought, and is particularly sensitive to scorching summers. Choose a sunny or partially shaded spot, sheltered from prevailing winds. Soak the root balls thoroughly before planting. Add organic matter at planting time and water generously during the first few years, as well as during prolonged dry spells. Apply a special conifer fertiliser every year in April and hoe the soil in summer. Although extremely hardy, this conifer dislikes heavy, waterlogged soil in winter.
