Chionanthus virginicus is planted from September to November or from February to April, outside periods of frost. It grows in a deep, fertile, humus-bearing, moist and well-aerated soil. Its optimum is in a slightly acidic to neutral soil, with a pH of 6 to 7. Its tolerance is wider, from pH 5.5 to pH 8: it therefore accepts acid, neutral and moderately calcareous soils, without requiring heather soil. It also tolerates clay and temporary moisture, but its growth slows in compact, persistently airless or dry soil. A sunny position encourages flowering in regions with cool, damp summers; in hot regions, light partial shade is preferable. Loosen the soil thoroughly and incorporate well-rotted compost if it is poor. Water regularly during the first two or three summers, then during dry spells. Place a young plant in its final position, as older specimens tolerate transplanting poorly.

Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
