More information

Two different varieties of bush paper, the Edgeworthia chrysantha species with yellow and white flowers and its orange version Red Dragon 'Akebono'. These deciduous bushes are sought after for their remarkable, fragrant winter flowering, which can be enjoyed between February and March. The paper bush paper is not very resistant to cold (-12 °C at most) and prefers mild and humid climates as well as well-drained non-limestone soils. If you choose to grow it in a pot, you will need to bring it indoors to a veranda at the first frost, similar to orangery plants.

Description

This pair of Winter-flowering Edgeworthias brings together two different varieties of deciduous bush called Paper Bush or Golden Paper Bush. Related to Daphnes, these plants have a unique winter flowering, composed of small tubular flowers that gather in spherical umbels hanging from bare branches from February to March. Their fragrance resembles cloves. A well-branched bushy habit and silvery bark are also part of their charm. They are not very hardy, resisting short frosts of -10 to -12°C. When grown in containers, they should be overwintered like citrus trees. To enjoy their fragrance, place them in a high-traffic area.

The duo consists of:

1 Edgeworthia chrysantha: this is the typical species, a bush that reaches 1.50 m in all directions. Its small cone-shaped, white and golden yellow flowers, are grouped in silky pompons. They appear on the bare wood between February and March depending on the region.

1 Edgeworthia chrysantha Red Dragon: a slightly more compact variety, reaching 1.20 m in all directions. Its flowers are bicoloured, with a white tube and an orange corolla. Its inflorescences are also larger than those of the typical species.

Plant this duo of Edgeworthias in May-June, in open ground in mild oceanic climates or in large pots in colder regions. They can be exposed to morning sun or partial shade, always sheltered from the wind. These bushes thrive in neutral or slightly acidic soil, rich in humus, light, and remaining moist even in summer. You can plant them in a shrub bed or hedge, against a wall or on the edge of a light wood, respecting a spacing of 1 m between each plant. These plants associate particularly well with all ericaceous soil shrubs that have the same requirements. To extend the flowering period of your bed, choose from Inkarho Rhododendrons that tolerate limestone, varieties with white, yellow, or orange flowers. Or Chinese azaleas in warm tones.

Planting and care

Hardy to approximately -10 °C once mature and in a sheltered position, the Edgeworthia thrives in mild oceanic climates. It is generally cultivated like a camellia or a rhododendron. This bush likes humus-bearing, light soils that do not dry out too much, preferably without limestone. Water regularly, especially during the first two years, even in winter if it is dry. Mulch the base with organic mulch to save on watering. The Edgeworthia does not need pruning, but it can be done sparingly in autumn if necessary. Apply well-rotted compost in autumn. Choose its location carefully from the start, as it does not like to be transplanted. No notable parasites or diseases are known.

Plants grown in pots should be regularly watered with non-limestone water and fed every month from March to August. In autumn, bring the pots indoors to a bright and lightly heated area, protected from frost.
