Description

The winter heather Erica x darleyensis Winter Belles Katia is a shrub resulting from cross-breeding between Erica carnea and Erica erigena. This shrub has a rounded, upright habit and flowers from December to March. These large flowers form a cluster 3 to 10 cm long in a magnificent pure white.

The foliage of Erica Winter Belles is evergreen. It is formed of medium green lanceolate leaves 3 to 10 mm long. At ripeness, the shrub can reach 50 cm in height.

Very hardy, this heather grows in Europe, in temperate Africa as well as in the temperate regions of western and central Asia. It is an ideal shrub for planting in beds of winter heathers, particularly other Erica Winter Belles such as Erica Phoebe. Also, it is an excellent groundcover whether on its own or paired with other ericaceous plants or dwarf conifers.

Planting and care

Erica Winter Belles likes full sun in any type of soil, provided it is acidic and well-drained. Easy to grow, water it once or twice a week depending on the ambient temperature. Each year after flowering, cut back the shoots that have finished flowering to 2 cm from the previous year's shoot. Erica can be prone to Phytophthora (root rot), Pythium and Rhizoctonia during hot, humid periods.
