The Hydrangea aspera Villosa is planted in autumn or spring, when no frost is expected, in partial shade. In regions with cool summers, it tolerates more sun if the soil remains moist; in slightly warmer climates, avoid the afternoon sun. Prepare a wide planting hole and loosen the soil deeply. Incorporate well-rotted compost or leaf mould into poor soils to increase their humus content and their ability to retain moisture. The soil should remain moist, but water must not stagnate around the roots. Water regularly during the first two years and in dry periods; an organic mulch limits soil warming and evaporation.
