Hydrangea macrophylla 'Teller Pink' is a variety of Hydrangea with flat heads. Its inflorescences turn pink in neutral soil and blue in acidic soil. Throughout the summer, these beautiful flowers stand out against the dark green foliage. Of medium size, it reaches 1.80 m (5 ft 11 in) in all directions, or even a little more, forming a beautiful bush with long summer flowering. This beautiful and easy-to-grow bush will thrive in non-chalky soil and partially shaded areas, on the edge of trees or in the heart of a flower bed.
Hydrangea macrophylla is a deciduous bush, native to Japan, where its beauty has been appreciated for centuries, and mentioned in poems dating back to the 8th century! In this country that attaches great importance to plants, festivals are even dedicated to this bush. Hydrangeas belong to the Hydrangeaceae family, which they named, and which includes other widely cultivated ornamental genera, such as Deutzia and Philadelphus, or less common ones like Carpenteria. Among the H. macrophylla, there are varieties with round heads and those with flat heads, or Teller in German.
This 'Teller Pink' Hydrangea is a variety that produces beautiful pink inflorescences in neutral to slightly alkaline soil, turning blue in acidic soil, of medium size (15 to 18 cm (5.9 to 7.1 in)), clearly visible against the medium green foliage. In summer, it flowers for many weeks, between July and September. Its inflorescences are composed of very narrow and tightly packed fertile flowers in the centre, and larger sterile florets on the periphery, reminiscent of some Viburnum flowers.
A medium-sized bush, it forms a shrub about 1.80 m (5 ft 11 in) to 2 m (6 ft 7 in) high and wide. Like all Hydrangea macrophylla, this bush is not strictly speaking an ericaceous plant, but it prefers neutral to acidic soil, while tolerating some limestone. A partially shaded to shaded exposure in a warm climate will suit it well, with regular watering in summer because it does not like drought (of the soil and the atmosphere), which can cause its leaves to wilt. Care involves annual pruning in spring before the new leaves emerge. This bush with long summer flowering is very hardy (-20°C (-4 °F) or more, severe frosts can damage the tips of the branches but they easily regrow after pruning in spring). Easy to grow, it can live for a very long time.
The 'Teller Pink' Hydrangea is beautiful with its pink colour and its inflorescences with a slightly old-fashioned, very romantic charm. You can plant it in isolation under the light shade of tall trees, but it will also be valuable in mixed flower beds with plants that prefer acidic soil. Choose plants with staggered flowering throughout the year to frame the flowering of this Hydrangea. In a romantic setting, associate it with the precious Daphne odora Aureomarginata with its early flowering and unforgettable fragrance. The moving flowers of the immaculate white Magnolia stellata will then take over, followed by the delicate bells of Enkianthus, which will ensure the transition with this Hydrangea. And to end the year beautifully, Camellia sasanqua with its fully open petals and bright yellow stamens will be perfect.

Botanical data
Plant 'Teller Pink' macrophylla hydrangea in spring or early autumn, preferably in a slightly shaded to shaded position, for example against an east-facing wall or even north-facing. In very cold regions it may be prudent to protect the stump with a thick mulch. Keep it sheltered from cold, drying winds. It does not necessarily require ericaceous soil but appreciates deep, moist well-drained, and fairly fertile soil. In poor soil, enrich with a good compound fertilizer before planting, and mix the existing soil with a substrate containing some compost.
If the soil is dry at the base of the wall, plant the root ball at least 30-40 cm (11.8-15.7 in) away and incorporate a quantity of well-rotted compost to better retain moisture in the soil. After planting, be careful of slugs, which are quite fond of young leaves. It is very hardy and can be planted in cold regions without fear. Water regularly during hot periods to prevent the foliage from wilting during dry spells.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
