More information

A Photinia particularly adapted to the creation of evergreen colorful hedges. It is a medium-sized bush with exceptionally fast growth and an upright habit, remaining densely ramified even without pruning. Its glossy foliage, large in size, highlights the bright red coloration of the young shoots. In late spring and, provided it is not pruned, its white umbels bring light and charm to flower beds and free hedges. Hardy and robust, it tolerates heat and drought once well rooted. To be planted in full sun or partial shade in a normal, deep, and well-drained soil.

Description

The Photinia x fraseri 'Dynamo Red' is a variety with exceptionally rapid growth and an upright habit, naturally remaining dense and ramified even without pruning. It is a medium-sized evergreen bush, decorative with its bright red young shoots in spring and its mature leaves of a glossy dark green. In mild climates, with less pronounced seasonality, this two-tone effect lasts for much of the year. This variety is particularly suitable for the creation of colorful, trimmed or untrimmed, evergreen hedges.

The Photinia (x) fraseri or Fraser's Photinia is an old horticultural creation born in 1940 in the United States. This hybrid is the result of cross-breeding between the Photinia glabra, native to Japan, and the Photinia serrulata, native to China. It has given rise to some famous cultivars, including 'Red Robin', planted on a large scale in our parks and gardens. In recent years, some beautiful improvements have been born, more colorful, denser, more robust, and maintenance-free, such as the 'Dynamo Red' variety.

Not exceeding 3 m in height with a 2 m (7ft) spread, the Photinia 'Dynamo Red' has a naturally dense, upright habit and is ramified, showing exceptionally rapid growth. Its foliage, evergreen in winter, is composed of leaves arranged alternately on the branches. They are tough, about 5-7 cm (2-3in) long, finely toothed at the edges, and a shiny dark green. The young shoots are also remarkably bright red in color. From May to June, clusters of small white flowers appear, reaching 10 cm (4in) in diameter, mostly at the ends of the branches. They are slightly fragrant and attract many pollinating insects.

In addition to the beautiful coloration of its young foliage, its hardiness and adaptation to all types of soil have earned the Photinia (x) fraseri global success. Just like it, 'Dynamo Red' tolerates all types of well-drained soil, from deep, to moist, to dry. It is an easy-to-grow and low-maintenance bush that can withstand temperatures down to -15°C when exposed to the sun. Of course, it is ideal for creating medium-sized hedges, trimmed or untrimmed, and it adapts very well to container gardening and looks superb in flower beds. Highly ornamental, it can also be planted as a solitary specimen in a small garden. The possibilities for associations are numerous, depending on the regions and the preferences of each gardener: with other easy-to-grow evergreen bushes such as Elaeagnus ebbingei Compacta, laurier-tin, Rhamnus alaternus Argenteovariegata, Berberis, Olearia, holly, or Osmanthus. It will also accompany other white-flowering spring bushes such as Spirea or Mock Orange.

Tips: Excessively chalky or clayey soils should be avoided. A balancing pruning is necessary in summer.

Planting and care

Photinia x fraseri 'Dynamo Red' can be planted in spring or autumn in any deep, fertile and well-drained soil. Once well established, it tolerates summer drought if it has deep soil. It appreciates a sunny or partially shaded exposure, sheltered from cold and brisk winds. It also withstands shaded exposures, to the detriment of flowering and the intensity of young foliage coloration. Water well for the first two years, once or twice a week, especially in hot and dry weather during summer. Mulch the soil to keep it cool in summer in hot regions and protect the base in winter in cold regions. Prune in summer to balance the habit, cutting back half of all branches. This will promote the growth of young variegated rose leaves in autumn. Note that climates with less contrasting, humid and cool seasons promote the growth of photinias and the renewal of young red shoots that can be produced throughout the year.

Photinia is generally a robust plant however, in wet weather or, conversely, in certain dry and poor soils, photinias can be affected by a fungus (entomosporiosis). Watch out for black and red spots appearing on the leaves, treat with Bordeaux mixture. Weevils can also nibble on the edges of the leaves at night, while their larvae can attack the roots: treat the soil with nematodes that attack the larvae.
