Description
Prunus incisa 'Kojo-No-Mai' is a dwarf bush with a rounded habit. This Japanese flowering cherry blooms from March to May, depending on the region; its numerous light red buds open to reveal small pendulous pale pink flowers. The flowers are solitary or in pairs. They measure 1 to 2cm (0.8in) in diameter and have 5 petals.
After flowering, the prunus is adorned with deciduous leaves that are 0.5 to 3cm (1.2in) long and have beautiful shades. Initially yellow-green, they turn medium green in summer and become red scarlet in autumn. Native to southwestern Japan, it is a hardy bush. This Prunus, also known as Amygdalus, can reach a height of 2.5m (8ft) at maturity.
Its twisted branches give the cherry tree a suitable habit for bonsai cultivation. With slow growth, this bush is suitable for small gardens as well as for container or pot cultivation on a terrace. You can plant it in a flowerbed or as a solitary bush, in a hedge, or even in a row.

Prunus incisa 'Kojo-No-Mai' thrives in full sun or partial shade in any soil that is fairly rich, moist, but well-drained. During planting, mix your soil with compost at a ratio of 50%. Dig a large planting hole. In March-April and September, remove any unruly or tangled branches that compromise symmetry. Be mindful of late frosts that could damage early flowering. That's why it's preferable to place the prunus in a slightly sheltered location.
