Description

Rhododendron ‘Double Dots’ is a large-flowered hybrid noted for its double pale pink corollas heavily spotted with red. With its dense habit and evergreen foliage, this shrub looks splendid in semi-shade scenes, at the edge of woodland, in acid soil beds, or in a container on a sheltered patio. Its mid-May flowering is enchanting.

Belonging to the Ericaceae family, ‘Double Dots’ is a horticultural hybrid selected in the Netherlands and registered in the 1990s. It is the result of a cross between R. ‘Whitney’s Tiger Lily’ and a seedling of 'Graf Lennart' pollinated by Rhododendron calophytum; the latter is responsible for the dark red spots visible in the flowers and the size of the inflorescences. The cultivar name refers to the well-marked 'dots' at the heart of the petals.
It is a shrub with an upright, well-branched habit of moderate growth. In open ground, it reaches about 1.50 m in height and 1.20–1.50 m in spread after 10 years. The evergreen, leathery, lanceolate to oblong leaves are medium green, matt to slightly glossy. Flowering occurs from mid-May to early June, depending on the climate. The floral trusses are corymb inflorescences, borne at the tips of shoots, composed of large, double, funnel-shaped, pale pink flowers, spotted dark red on the upper lobe.
Hardiness: −12 to −15 °C in well-drained, mulched soil.

Plant ‘Double Dots’ at the edge of a woodland or near a path, to enjoy its flowering more easily. You can pair it with Pieris japonica ‘Mountain Fire’ for its colourful young foliage, and the compact Japanese Maple ‘Orange Dream’. At their base, Hosta ‘Halcyon’ and June will carpet the ground without competing with its shallow roots. Complete with a Dryopteris erythrosora, a fern which is decorative all year round. Other compact rhododendrons such as 'Fragrantissimum', ‘Kalinka’, or ‘Blue Jay’ will form a cohesive bed in semi-shade, with staggered flowering times and compatible heights.

Planting and care

Plant Rhododendron 'Double Dots' in a semi-shaded position, protected from cold, drying winds. It requires moist, humus-bearing, light, acidic soil without limestone. Like all ericaceous plants, it cannot tolerate dry soils, nor heavy soils that are waterlogged in winter. If the soil remains moist in summer, this rhododendron will also tolerate morning sun. Avoid planting at its base, as its shallow roots do not cope well with competition from other plants, especially for water.

Dig a hole three times the volume of the pot. Soak the root ball in water (non-limestone) and plant the shrub at collar level, in a mixture composed of 1/4 peat, leaf mould, gravel or pozzolana, and loam. Water generously and keep the soil damp in summer. Azaleas and Rhododendrons have a shallow root system. Consequently, they do not cope well with long periods of drought. Therefore, a soil enriched with humus and abundant watering during dry periods is recommended. Moreover, this root system is not very strong, which is why it is essential to lighten heavy soils with draining materials (gravel, pozzolana, clay balls) at planting. Apply a mulch of shredded pine bark at the base of the shrub every spring to maintain soil moisture while preserving an acidic pH.

Maintenance involves cutting off faded flowers in summer and cleaning out dead branches. Azaleas and Rhododendrons can sometimes be attacked by vine weevils, which eat the edges of leaves and rootlets, as well as by the infamous 'rhododendron lace bug', which does not often cause severe damage. Effective organic solutions now exist against vine weevils. Yellowing of leaves (chlorosis) in Rhododendron indicates poor iron assimilation and causes premature death of the plant. It is possible to apply iron chelate diluted in water. However, while limestone is usually the cause, poorly drained soil or a root ball planted too deeply can also explain the phenomenon.

Rhododendrons perform at their best in cooler climates, planted in acid soil and in a humid environment. Their cultivation in warmer, drier climates is generally doomed to failure in the long run, despite all efforts to acclimatise them.
