The Syringa ‘Red Pixie’ is best planted from autumn to early spring, when there is no risk of frost; a container-grown specimen can be planted later if watering is kept up. Choose full sun to encourage abundant flowering. The soil should be well drained, neutral to alkaline, fairly fertile and retain some moisture in spring. In clay soils, make sure above all that water drains away freely. Water regularly for the first one or two dry spells. Once well established, this lilac tolerates periods of drought, but prolonged droughts restrict its growth and repeat flowering. In a pot, choose a large container with drainage holes and a substantial, loam-rich but well-drained compost; watering needs closer monitoring in summer.
