The lilac ‘Katherine Havemeyer’ flowers more generously in full sun. It likes a deep, fertile, well-drained soil, neutral to alkaline. It tolerates clay soils if water does not stagnate in winter, but does less well in very acid soil, constantly waterlogged or too dry in spring.
Planting is preferably carried out in autumn or early spring, outside periods of frost. Regular watering during the first two summers encourages deep rooting. Once established, the shrub tolerates fairly dry summers. Temperate, continental and montane climates are particularly favourable to it. Mediterranean summers are a little too hot and too dry for this shrub. Any suckers should be cut back at their point of origin when they become too numerous.
