Unfortunately, the young plant never grew in our garden; we had chosen a lasagna planting for the spring; hyacinths, tulips, crocuses, and anemones sprouted, but none of the shoots grew! Disappointed!!

Description

Allium oreophilum (syn. Allium ostrowskianum) is a small ornamental garlic, which bears loose lilac-pink bell-shaped flowers on ribbon-like green foliage with a metallic sheen. It is the ideal bulb to adorn the edges of a wild pathway.

This small bulbous perennial forms a carpet, reaching a height of 25 to 30cm (10 to12in). Its glabrous, thick stem, bears deciduous, linear, flat, bluish-green leaves, 5 to 10mm wide. From late May to June, it produces small, trailing, loose umbels of lilac-pink flowers. When cut, it releases a strong garlic smell.

Native to the steppes of Central Asia, Allium ostrowskianum tolerates all poor, moist and well-drained soils in warm locations. Avoid very wet soils in winter. Be cautious as it can spread quickly if it likes its environment. Cultivation in pots is possible, using a light substrate composed of 1/3 sand, 1/3 potting soil, and 1/3 perlite.

Allium oreophilum is perfect for adorning sunny borders in a wild garden. Plant it alongside fescues, moss phlox, and aubrietas.

Planting and care

Allium oreophilum should be planted in autumn at a depth of 8 to 10cm (3 to 4in) in moist, well-drained soil in a warm location, spaced 15cm (6in) apart. Add sand to the planting hole to improve bulb drainage and avoid heavy soils. If the water does not stagnate, the bulb can withstand harsh winters.
