Description

Cyclamen coum, also known as the Cyclamen of the Island of Cos, is remarkable for its winter flowering. This collection will create flowering carpets in winter, at the base of trees or in a slightly shaded rockery in summer. With its delicate flowers and often marbled leaves, this cyclamen adds a touch of colour to the dormant garden. Its flowering period extends from January to March when its pink or white petals brighten up the undergrowth. Cyclamen Coum is cold-resistant, prefers well-drained soils and spreads slowly to form a delightful carpet.

This Winter Flowering Carpet selection consists of:

5 pink Cyclamen coum: it presents flowers of a bright pink that contrast beautifully with its dark green foliage, sometimes marked with silver patterns. Its small but abundant flowers bloom from January and continue until March. It forms a dense, 10 cm high carpet that gradually spreads year after year.

3 white Cyclamen coum: a rare and delicate variety, offering flowers of a pure, almost immaculate white that brighten up the shaded corners of the garden in the middle of winter. Its foliage is often adorned with silver-grey patterns. This cyclamen forms a perfect association with its pink counterparts.

The bulbs are packed and labelled separately.

Plant your Cyclamen coum tubers in late summer so they can root in autumn. Choose a shady or semi-shady location with well-drained soil, rich in compost or humus. To create a harmonious carpet, mix the varieties and place the bulbs in tight groups, spacing each one 15 to 20 cm apart. Use about 12 bulbs per m² for a dense and uniform effect.

To enhance your Cyclamen coum, associate them with Oriental Hellebores, whose white, pink, or purple hues perfectly complement those of the cyclamens. Plant three to four Oriental Hellebores per m², placing them behind your cyclamens for a winter scene with depth. Add some evergreen ferns like Polystichum setiferum, their textured foliage will highlight the delicacy of the cyclamen flowers. To complete this winter tableau, plant some Snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis) in front of the cyclamens, for a gentle play of textures and colours.

Planting and care

Cyclamen (with its corky tuber) should be planted 2 cm deep (the top of the tuber should be 2 cm below the surface of the soil) in well-drained soil, even if it's limestone and rocky. Plant your cyclamen in partial shade, in light and worked soil. You can plant them in groups of 3 or 5. Cyclamen coum prefer slightly limestone soils, dry in summer but not excessively, which corresponds to their resting period, and they dislike heavy and/or waterlogged soils in winter. They are excellent plants for dry woodland areas and shaded rockeries. They can also be planted in lawns, and multiply on their own with the help of ants that disperse the seeds.
