I have planted the bulbs that I have just received, but I am puzzled about the size and condition of the bulbs... we just have to wait for spring... the lilies received at the same time were no better.

Description

Fritillaria imperialis 'Prolifera' is an elegant fritillary with overlapping orange-red bell-shaped flower crowns at a height of 70cm (28in).

Also known as the crown imperial, it is a bulbous perennial with shiny, linear, green leaves that bears two stems with up to 5 trailing bell-shaped flowers arranged in a crown. This stiff stem is topped with a tuft of dark green, glossy leaves, reminiscent of the foliage at the base.

This fritillary thrives in moist but well-drained soils, even poor ones. The pungent smell of the bulb deters moles but not mice. A gravel bed at planting will provide partial protection against rodents. Cultivating it in a deep, well-drained pot and keeping it in a cold greenhouse during winter is more suitable for rare species.

Fritillaria imperialis 'Prolifera' looks spectacular in a mass planting with tulips, such as our 'Carnival of Venice' tulip combination.

Planting and care

Fritillaria imperialis 'Prolifera' thrives in full sun. It needs light but not necessarily direct sunlight. It ideally thrives in a continental climate where winters and summers are dry and springs are humid. Plant it in fertile and well-drained soil. Avoid heavy soil as it may lead to the development of fungi. If drainage is insufficient, the fritillary may rot. Plant it from September to October, adding sand, gravel, or pumice to the planting hole. Place the bulb at a depth of 20cm (8in). In winter, we recommend mulching the fritillary. Remove faded flowers if you do not want them to self-seed. Do not water your fritillaries in summer and winter. If the soil is too dry in spring, lightly water (without excess) to stimulate bulb growth.
