Iris reticulata Polar Ice

The Iris reticulata 'Polar Ice' is a small bulbous iris of great elegance prized for its crystalline white flowers with subtle bluish veins and a yellow median, which appear from late winter. Derived from the cultivar 'Sheila Ann Germaney', its low and graceful habit makes it a preferred choice to brighten up borders, rockeries and pots from the first days of February. Very hardy, it prefers light, well-drained soil and a sunny position. It dislikes waterlogged ground in winter, which encourage bulb rot, but tolerates dry periods in summer without difficulty. Used as groundcover, in planters or spring beds, it pairs wonderfully with snowdrops, crocuses or muscari, creating a garden display full of freshness and light.

The Iris reticulata 'Polar Ice' belongs to the Iridaceae family and is a cultivar of the species Iris reticulata native to the mountains south of the Caspian Sea (eastern Turkey, Caucasus, Iran) where it grows in well-drained rocky terrain. The recently obtained cultivar 'Polar Ice' is distinguished by its pure white flowering veined with light blue, evoking a polar brilliance compared to the typical blue or yellow colours of the species. This cultivar has a low and compact habit, reaching 10–15 cm in height with a spread of about 10 cm, with similar dimensions in pots or in the ground. Growth is rapid: the bulb produces a flower spike in its first year from February–March, followed by narrow, linear foliage with a triangular section reaching 15–20 cm after flowering. The buried section consists of a bulb covered in a fibrous network, planted shallowly (5–10 cm deep), which allows for slight naturalisation through offsets in bulblets after a few years. The flowering is from late winter to early spring, consisting of slightly fragrant flowers formed of three broad outer trailing sepals and three erect white petals veined with pale blue, sometimes with a throat punctuated with yellow. The foliage is deciduous, disappearing after flowering to allow for a summer rest period, essential for the proper development of the bulb. The flower stems are bare, cylindrical, and a vivid green.

In a well-designed garden, the Iris reticulata 'Polar Ice' emerges at the edge of winter like a flash of frost under a pale sky. Its icy whiteness settles gracefully among the snowdrops and golden crocuses, while the azure hues of the Siberian squill or the mauve reflections of Iris reticulata 'Clairette' will extend its luminous impulse. In a pot, placed on a stone table, or nestled in an alpine trough, it will gain intensity when paired with grape hyacinths or the striated elegance of an Iris 'Katharine Hodgkin'. Its simplicity then becomes a motif, a delicate detail discovered up close, at ground level or in the heart of a still-dormant corner of the garden.
