Description

Ornithogalum narbonense is a perennial bulbous plant that comes from the Mediterranean. From May to July, small flowers bloom in stars. They are gathered in elongated clusters. The flower of Ornithogalum is of a pure white with fine green stripes on the sepals.

The flowers are upright on tall, stiff stems. They join the leaves, which are shorter than the floral stem. This foliage has the peculiarity of being evergreen and is of a glaucous green colour. Ornithogalum narbonense is hardy to -10°C (14°F).

This perennial, nicknamed Star of Bethlehem, can reach a height of 30 to 60cm (12 to 24in). It grows in sunny meadows and fallow lands, as well as in short grass meadows or in open woods. You can cultivate this Ornithogalum narbonense in open ground or in pots.

Planting and care

Ornithogalum narbonense should be placed in a sunny position in a fairly fertile and well-drained soil. Do not place it in a damp corner. It is a thermophilic plant, meaning it requires warmth and sun while avoiding the scorching rays of the summer sun. However, it can still be grown in light shade. Plant the bulbs at a depth of 5 to 7cm (2 to 3in) and space them 10cm (4in) apart. Place them in a greenhouse in autumn for early flowering. In winter, keep the bulbs dry with a mulch as they are sensitive to frost and bulb rot caused by excess water. You can replant the bulbs in May. Nevertheless, this plant is resistant to diseases and parasites. Ornithogalum self-seeds spontaneously, which is why it can become invasive in mild climate regions. To prevent this, cut the flower stems as soon as they have faded.
