Description
Corydalis solida 'White Swallow' is a variety of solid corydalis with full bulbs that is distinguished by its diaphanous white flowering. A small, hardy, and charming perennial bulbous plant, it offers an early spring flowering, made up of small tubular flowers that are curiously spurred. The blooms are arranged in somewhat disorderly clusters amidst finely cut foliage. It is known as "bird in a bush" because the flowering plant resembles small birds perched on a nest of greenery. Planted in partial shade in good, fertile, moist, and well-drained soil, the bulbs will grow without care and quickly produce small daughter bulbs that will expand the clump. An almost fail-proof plant!
Corydalis solida is a small bulbous plant native to central and southern Europe and boreal and western Asia. It grows in shady meadows, woods, and copse, as well as in mountain and subalpine meadows, on limestone soil. It belongs to the Papaveraceae family.
The cultivar 'White Swallow' is an herbaceous perennial plant with tuberous roots. It is deciduous in winter. It boasts good hardiness. It develops its foliage in spring. Its light grey-green leaves are divided into 3 narrow, dissected, and ovate segments, measuring 5 to 8cm (2 to 3in) long. The plant forms a clump that measures about 20cm (8in) in height with a width of 20 to 25cm (8 to 10in) at maturity. Flowering occurs from March to May, in the form of compact, upright clusters composed of numerous tube-shaped white flowers, 1 to 2cm (1in) long. They are terminated by 2 lips open on an almost white throat and equipped with a slender, downward-curved spur. The flowers are gathered in dense spikes on an upright stem. The foliage often disappears in summer.
Corydalis 'White Swallow' is primarily a shade-loving plant that will express its full potential on the edge of woodlands. It can be planted with other perennials that can withstand competition from tree or bush roots, such as the cousin of Solomon's Seal (Uvularia grandiflora), hardy fuchsias, purple creeping bugle, Japanese anemones, Balkan Digitalis, toad lilies (Tricyrtis), or even bleeding hearts. Corydalis solida also performs well in pots and creates a beautiful effect in hanging baskets from which it cascades. Plant it above walls, or in shady rockeries.

Planting and care
Corydalis solida 'White Swallow' prefers to be planted in full sun or partial shade, or even in full shade, in very well-drained and moderately fertile soil. It tolerates the presence of limestone and clay in the soil. This young plant prefers soils that remain moist, even in summer, especially if it is exposed to the sun. It is easily cultivated in most of our regions. Mildew and rust can develop if the atmosphere or soil is too dry. Aphids and gastropods will attack this plant.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
