Description

The Darwin Hybrid Tulip 'Silverstream' gives the illusion of a mix of assorted varieties. It offers irregularly striped flowers with different combinations ranging from soft yellow to intense red and white, as well as pink and white. Moreover, the flowers change colour throughout their flowering period, gradually transitioning from light to dark. The elegant foliage of 'Silverstream' is edged with cream-yellow. Belonging to the line of remarkable Darwin hybrids, this vigorous tulip produces flowers with strong, weather-resistant stems that bloom in the heart of spring. It is sculptural in borders and also an exceptional flower for bouquets.

The Darwin Hybrid Tulip 'Silverstream' belongs to the Lily family. Originally horticultural in origin, it is currently classified in Division 4, which is characteriaed by large, single, oval flowers that appear in the middle of the season, carried by long, weather-resistant stems. Tulips in this group are the most cultivated for the cut flower trade. Originally derived from cross-breeding with botanical species such as T. fosteriana, they show no signs of their wild ancestry. 'Silverstream' reaches a height of 55 cm when in bloom. Perched on strong stems, well above the broadly lanceolate leaves, the large flowers are elongated and elegant, and their colour is enhanced by the slightly waxy and translucent texture of the petals. Flowering takes place in April-May, with each flower lasting several days before fading.

The 'Silverstream' tulip stands out in large borders and bouquets. Its changing shades harmonise with tulips in bold colours, red, pink, yellow, or white, to create a dynamic composition. It accompanies the flowering of spring bulbs such as daffodils, jonquils and hyacinths, or pairs well with lady's mantle, Corsican hellebores, and spurges whose tangy hues create a joyful mix with the chameleon tulip. In borders, rockeries, and flower beds, or in pots and containers, its tall stature and delicate colour add a touch of elegance and refinement to compositions. To prolong its vase life, use a small amount of water, just enough to cover the bottom, and if the tulips open too quickly, add two to three ice cubes to the vase each day.

Planting and care

Plant the Darwin Silverstream bulbs in autumn, as soon as you receive them, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm, spacing them 10 cm apart. Plant in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining soil. Never add manure or poorly decomposed compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The tulip will grow well in moist to dry soil. Place it in a good, sunny or semi-shaded position. Once flowering is finished, it is a good idea to remove the seed heads to avoid exhausting the plant.
