Description

Alstroemeria Inca Lake is a variety that stands out for its refined flowering, a beautiful deep mauve punctuated with yellow, which you can enjoy from June to October. It has a compact habit, ideal for pots and for the front of borders. Highly appreciated by florists, it looks stunning in bouquets.

Belonging to the Alstroemeriaceae family (Liliaceae), Alstroemeria, or simply Inca Lily or Peruvian Lily, is a perennial with a tuberous root. Its funnel-shaped flowers are quite similar to Lily and Orchid flowers. They are grouped above upright stems, adorned with deciduous medium green foliage. The Inca Lake variety is semi-dwarf, with a compact habit, reaching an average height of 45cm (18in) and a width of 40cm (16in).

Having originated from South America, the Inca Lily has retained a preference for warmth. Therefore, it should be planted in a warm and sheltered position, in full sun or partial shade in regions with scorching summers. It thrives in a light, deep, well-drained, and humus-rich soil. Its root system may be a bit slow in the first few years, so be patient... it takes some time for it to establish itself.

It is moderately hardy (down to -7°C (19.4°F)), and if grown in a pot, it should be stored away during winter. In gardens located in regions with harsh winters, we recommend generously mulching its base before the arrival of the first frost.

To encourage its long flowering period, it is advisable to remove faded flowers, but Alstroemeria is so elegant in bouquets that it is unlikely to be necessary.

In the garden, it is an easy plant to combine within a border, in harmony with the Monarda fistulosa var.menthifolia and the Penstemon 'Alice Hindley'.

Planting and care

You will plant your Alstroemerias in a warm and sheltered location, ideally in a light, deep, well-drained and humus-rich soil. If your soil is very heavy, it is advisable to mix it with sand and compost. Its root system can be a bit slow in the first few years, so be patient... it needs some time to establish itself. Planting should be done in late spring, once the risk of frost has passed.

Alstroemeria is moderately hardy (up to -7°C (19.4°F)). If grown in a pot, it should be stored frost-free during winter. In the garden, in regions with harsh winters, we recommend generously mulching its base before the arrival of the first frost.
