More information

A compact tuberous perennial forming a clump adorned with large cherry-red flowers elegantly marked with a speckled yellow centre. Its generous flowering extends from early summer until the first frosts, and it adapts perfectly to both pots and borders. Hardy down to –10 °C, this plant appreciates a sunny to partially shaded position in rich, moist, well-drained soil, and tolerates damp conditions better than many classic alstroemerias.

Description

Alstroemeria Incalys Cherry is a particularly floriferous dwarf Peruvian Lily, offering large, intensely coloured cherry-red flowers, contrasted by a bright yellow, finely speckled heart. Its compact and dense habit, not exceeding 30 cm in height, makes it an ideal candidate for small beds, low borders, or summer containers. This modern variety, hardy down to –10°C, appreciates sunny or partially shaded positions, in moist, rich, and well-drained soil. Its long flowering period, from June until the first frosts, gives it strong decorative potential, but it needs protection from severe frosts and good winter mulching in cold climates.

Alstroemeria Incalys Cherry belongs to the Alstroemeriaceae family, and its cultivar is registered under the name ‘Turcal211'. Originating from the Incalys series developed by Ernest and Pierre Turc in Angers (France), this cultivar features larger and brighter flowers than the species, with a vibrant cherry-red colour and a contrasting speckled yellow heart, on a compact clump. The original species is native to the Andes and Chile. This cultivar adopts a dense, clump-forming habit of approximately 30 cm in height and 50 cm in width, with medium growth, proudly producing numerous flower stems from the first planting season in temperate climates. The stems are firm, erect, bearing umbels of up to 15 large campanulate flowers 5–7 cm in diameter, composed of six streaked tepals, a diameter significantly larger than the average for dwarf alstroemerias. Flowering continues from June until the first frosts in October-November, offering a generous production of cut flowers. The foliage is deciduous to semi-evergreen, depending on the winter, formed of narrow lanceolate leaves, glossy, dark, flexible leaves without prominent veins, measuring about 10–15 cm. The root system is tuberous, with fine fasciculate roots, sensitive to damage and requiring loose, deep, and well-drained soil. The plant does not produce rhizomes or invasive suckers but regenerates annually from its tuber.

Alstroemeria Incalys Cherry introduces a colour intensity that plays with the seasons. Its low, floriferous silhouette fits elegantly at the foot of light shrubs, between washed out clumps of Perovskia ‘Little Spire’, the plum reflections of Dahlia ‘Bishop of Llandaff’ or the purple calyces of Salvia ‘Amistad’. In a pot on a partially shaded terrace, it offers an almost uninterrupted living bouquet. Its deep red colour, stable in bright light, then becomes a focal point around which the boldest harmonies can be organised.

Planting and care

Plant Alstroemeria Incalys Cherry in spring, choosing a location in full sun or partial shade, in light, well-drained, fairly rich, low-lime, neutral to slightly acidic compost. They appreciate watering to support their flowering in summer. These plants are somewhat hardy, down to -8/-10°C, provided the soil remains dry in winter. The crown can be protected with a thick mulch of leaves or fern fronds in autumn. Slugs are very fond of young shoots, so be sure to protect them. Growing in pots allows the plants to be sheltered from frost by storing them in a bright, airy, and very minimally heated room.
