Alstroemeria Inticancha Sunday

Asltroemeria Inticancha Sunday is a new hybrid variety of Peruvian lily, with flowers similar to lilies, with a lilac pink color and a yellow centre streaked with brown. They appear from spring to autumn, on particularly robust and floriferous plants, ideal for borders and flowering pots. This not very hardy perennial plant is however easy to grow as an annual and really requires little maintenance for a fantastic result. It thrives in partial shade or morning sun, in light soil, which is not too dry.

Alstroemeria Inticancha Sunday is a recent variety, resulting from the hybridization of several tuberous species native to South America, particularly the Chilean Andes. These high-altitude plants belonging to the Alstroemeriaceae family can be more or less hardy, preferring cool, well-drained soil in lightly wooded and moist areas. Slow to establish, they can either disappear or... become invasive! Quirky but fantastic plants, very sensitive to growing conditions, they are 'indestructible' once you find the right spot for them.

Inticancha Sunday, like all plants in the Inticancha series, is not difficult to grow in humus-rich and light soil, both in the ground and in pots. The plant quickly forms bushy clumps with leafy stems reaching 60 cm (24in) in height when flowering, with a spread of 40 cm (16in). The flowering takes place from June to October-November. The open flowers are gathered in terminal umbels. They consist of 3 small central petals, bright yellow streaked with brown and bordered with violaceous pink, surrounded by 3 wider, lanceolate petals tinted with lilac pink and mauve. Each plant can produce at least 30 flowers. The foliage is arranged on the upper part of the stems. The leaves of this variety are medium green-blue. Foliage and stems disappear in winter, leaving only the running stump with fleshy roots underground, which can withstand frost down to -5/-8°C (23/17.6°F). The plant is sensitive to the shock of transplantation, especially in older plants.

Alstroemeria 'Inticancha Sunday is a superb variety for decorating flowering pots and for cut flowers. On the patio or balcony, it forms a floral display that rivals the brightness of balcony geraniums. In borders, this plant will blend well, for example, with annual poppies or grasses; Stipa, small Miscanthus or Muhlenbergia capillaris will accompany its autumn colours with their foliage and magnificent late-season blooms. You can also plant Ceratostigma plumbaginoides at its base, with intense blue flowers and red foliage in October. A marvel!
