Well, this is the first time I've seen this with lilies: I planted 6 bulbs in a giant pot, and they produced 6 stems, including 3 dwarf stems. Out of the 6 stems, only one has produced 3 huge buds that are about to bloom. The other 5 are sterile and have only produced leaves, and in some cases, deformed bud embryos that stopped growing. What a disappointment! I can only hope that they will bloom next year...

Description

The ‘Pink Perfection’ lily is a large bulbous plant. It bears an impressive compound flower crown on a sturdy stem, composed of large fragrant trumpets in a delicate slightly lilac pink, not too bright nor too pale. The petals have a thick substance and are fringed at the edges. The mass effect has pretty shades of pink. These tall lilies are enchanting and over time, they form enormous groups. Remarkable in the garden, they adapt very well in pots on the terrace and make magnificent cut flowers.

Lilies belong to the family of Liliaceae. In the classification of hybrids, Lilium 'Pink Perfection' belongs to the family of Lilium aurelian, the trumpet lilies, like Lilium regale (royal lily). It is a tall lily, which easily exceeds 120 cm (47in) high, with a spread of 45 cm (18in). It will flower in July, in the form of long pink flowers with orange stamens. The narrow leaves are arranged in a spiralled manner along the stem.

You can grow these lilies with perennial plants as they like having their base in the shade, and the perennials will help prevent the stems from tipping over in the wind. The lily is ideal for borders, and of course, for bouquets.

Planting and care

Lilium 'Pink Perfection' likes humus-rich soil and does not like chalky and poorly drained soils. Plant it in full sun or partial shade, preferably in October or in spring, with the bulbs 15 cm (6in) deep in a pocket of soil mixed with leaf compost. Surround them with a layer of sand that will prevent rotting and slug attacks, while allowing them to grow more easily. Mark the planting location, as vegetation only starts in April. Stake the stems when they reach 30 cm (12in) high. If red lily beetles appear, treat them immediately, as their larvae can devour all the leaves. The most effective method is to catch them by hand, but be careful as they drop as soon as they are touched. After flowering, it is a good idea to cut the faded flowers halfway to keep the bed beautiful during summer.
