Description

The Moroccan Mint - Mentha spicata 'Nannah' is a variety with light green, crinkled leaves that release a fresh fragrance. This hardy and perennial herbaceous plant can be grown in the ground or in a pot. It will reach a height of 40 to 60 cm (16 to 24in). Its leaves will add flavor to your salads, grilled dishes, sauces, or desserts. This variety is ideal for the famous mint tea.

This plant is organic: it comes from Organic Agriculture and is certified AB.

Mint is an aromatic bushy plant with highly fragrant foliage. It belongs to the Lamiaceae family, like lemon balm. Preferably, install it in a semi-shaded area, although mint can grow almost anywhere. It is a perennial plant that will be cultivated for two or three years, as beyond that, it tends to exhaust itself and become less productive. Carefully choose the location where you want to plant it: mint spreads very fast thanks to its trailing roots. You can also grow it in a pot, which allows you to control its spread. It is ideal to plant it in the vegetable garden as mint is known to repel unwanted insects in the garden, such as aphids and ants, as well as some rodents. As for leaf harvest, it can be done throughout the year, mainly from March to October.

There are many varieties of mint, the most well-known being spearmint, peppermint, pennyroyal, and lemon mint. Depending on the varieties, the leaves will offer you a range of aromas. In cooking, use them from appetizers to desserts, to flavor salads and raw vegetables, summer grills, yogurt-based sauces, or fruits. The leaves are also delicious in infusion, in tea or hot chocolate.

Harvest: Harvest the leaves as you need them. Choose the largest leaves and cut the complete stem to encourage regrowth. Preferably harvest in the morning to fully enjoy the aromatic qualities of mint. If you want to dry the leaves, pick the stems before flowering.

Storage: Ideally, consume the freshly cut leaves. If you don't use the fresh leaves, dry the stems and store the leaves in a tightly closed jar, protected from light.

Gardener's tip: If you want to plant mint in the vegetable garden while limiting its spread, plant it in a pot and bury the pot in the middle of your garden! Choose a large enough pot and regularly divide the clumps, in autumn or spring.

Planting and care

Planting is done in spring (from April to June) or at the end of summer (August to September). Preferably choose a partially shaded location, although Mint can grow almost anywhere.

To start with, let the plug plants grow by transplanting them into trays or 8 to 13 cm (3 to 5in) diameter buckets filled with compost. Place them in a warm and bright spot. Water regularly.

In the ground: Mint prefers rich, fertile and moist soil. If your soil is poor, add well-rotted compost a few months before planting, by scratching it into a depth of 5 cm (2in), after loosening the soil well.

For planting in the ground, space the plants 40 cm (16in) apart in all directions. Soak the root ball in water for a few moments before planting. Dig a hole, place the root ball and cover with fine soil. Firmly press and water to keep the soil moist. During cultivation, water moderately, mainly in case of high temperatures.

In a pot: Place a layer of gravel at the bottom of the pot to facilitate drainage. Fill it with compost, delicately place the plug plant and cover with soil. Firmly press and water to keep the soil moist. During cultivation, water regularly, about once a week (or more during dry periods). Repot every year.

At the end of autumn, cut the stems 10 cm (4in) above the ground to encourage new growth.
