Description

The Green Iceberg Batavia Lettuce is a popular variety, well-suited to heat. It forms beautiful, tightly packed, globe-shaped heads of light green, tender and crisp leaves, with a very mild flavor. It is a lettuce that stores well and is resistant to running to seed. It can be harvested when fully formed, from mid-June to October.

Iceberg lettuces are quite cold-resistant. In fact, they get their name from the fact that they used to be transported across the United States covered in ice.

If lettuce is one of the most popular vegetables (with an annual consumption of 4.2 kilograms per person), it is as much for its freshness and crunchiness as for its taste and nutritional qualities. It can be consumed raw in salads but also cooked, to accompany peas, for example.

Being the quintessential leafy vegetable, lettuce is an annual plant that belongs to the large Asteraceae family. Its Latin name, Lactuca sativa, refers both to the white sap (lactuca) that flows when it is cut and to the fact that it is cultivated (sativa).

It is an essential vegetable in any respectable vegetable garden, and there are so many varieties that it can be grown almost all year round.

Lettuce cultivation is easy as long as you follow the cultivation calendar for each variety. It grows quickly and thrives in any soil, as long as it is rich and remains moist.

Harvest: It is simply done with a knife when it reaches ripeness.

Storage: Lettuce can be stored for a few days in the refrigerator, but to enjoy its freshness to the fullest, we recommend consuming it right after harvesting.

Gardener's tip: During hot summer temperatures, lettuces exposed to direct sunlight tend to wither. To avoid this phenomenon, consider protecting them from intense rays using overturned crates. In our garden, summer lettuces are not grown in rows but are interspersed throughout: at the base of climbing beans, in the midst of cucumbers and squashes, whose foliage provides beneficial shade.

Note: Please note that our young plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, transplant and store them in a sheltered location (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before being planted outdoors once the risk of frost has been definitively eliminated.

Planting and care

Lettuce is not a very demanding vegetable, but it still requires a humus-rich soil, otherwise it tends to bolt prematurely. It is advisable, preferably in autumn, to add a moderate amount of well-rotted compost by digging it in to a depth of 5 cm (2in), after having loosened the soil, as is the case for all vegetable crops. It prefers slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH between 5.5 and 7.5).

During cultivation, remember that lettuce appreciates moist soils and remember to water it regularly.

Lettuce is a good companion plant, it can easily be intercropped with slower-growing vegetables such as beans, tomatoes, cucumbers... Just avoid planting it next to corn.
