Half of the products arrived in poor condition, with the salads being broken. Really disappointed with the website.

Description

The 'Adelys' Lettuce is an excellent variety of butter lettuce that forms large, well-formed heads with shiny, crisp leaves in a beautiful fresh green colour, very appetizing. It is resistant to heat and diseases, particularly aphids. Harvest in spring and summer. The new reference for head lettuce in the Garden!

If lettuce is one of the most popular vegetables (4.2 kilos per person per year), it is appreciated for its freshness, crunchiness, as well as its taste and nutritional qualities. It can be consumed raw in salads but also cooked, for example, to accompany peas.

As the ultimate leaf vegetable, lettuce is an annual plant that belongs to the large Asteraceae family. Its Latin name, Lactuca sativa, refers both to the white sap (lactuca) that flows when cut and to the fact that it is cultivated (sativa).

It is an essential vegetable in any respectable vegetable garden, and there are so many varieties that it can be grown almost all year round.

Lettuce cultivation is easy as long as you follow the cultivation calendar for each variety. Its growth is rapid, and it thrives in any soil, provided it is rich and remains moist.

Harvest: It is simply done with a knife when it reaches maturity.

Storage: Lettuce can be stored for a few days in the refrigerator, but to enjoy its freshness to the fullest, we recommend consuming it shortly after harvest.

Gardener's tip: During intense summer heat, lettuces exposed to direct sunlight tend to wilt miserably. To avoid this phenomenon, consider protecting them from the harsh rays using overturned crates. In our garden, summer lettuces are not grown in rows but are interspersed throughout: at the base of climbing beans, in the midst of cucumbers and squash, which provide beneficial shade.

Note: Please note that our young plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them in sheltered areas (conservatory, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before being planted outdoors once the risk of frost is definitively eliminated.

Planting and care

Lettuce is not a very demanding vegetable, but it still requires humus-rich soil, otherwise it tends to bolt prematurely. It is advisable to apply a moderate amount of mature compost in the autumn by scratching it into the soil to a depth of 5cm (2in), after loosening the soil as you would for any vegetable cultivation. Lettuce prefers slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH between 5.5 and 7.5).

During cultivation, remember that lettuce prefers moist soils and remember to water it regularly.

Lettuce is a good companion plant, it can easily be intercropped with other slower-growing vegetables such as beans, tomatoes, cucumbers... Just avoid planting it next to corn.
