Description

The 'Gabino' Lettuce is a blonde-headed lettuce grown in open fields that forms large heads from the first spring plantings, well balanced, with a tight bottom. It is harvested in spring and autumn. It is an excellent variety, resistant to diseases, with high cutting rates due to its hardiness. The young plants from Organic Agriculture can be planted from March under cover, or after the last frost in open ground. Harvest when the weight of the heads reaches 300g.

Cultivation cycle duration:

  • 30 to 60 days for summer crops in open fields.
  • 60 to 80 days for spring crops under cover.
  • 40 to 120 days for winter crops under cover.

If Lettuce is one of the most popular vegetables (consumed at a rate of 4.2 kilos per person per year), it is appreciated for its freshness, crunchiness, as well as its taste and nutritional qualities. It can be eaten raw in salads, but also cooked, for example, to accompany peas.

As the ultimate leaf vegetable, Lettuce is an annual plant that belongs to the large Asteraceae family. Its Latin name, Lactuca sativa, refers both to the white sap (lactuca) that oozes when it is cut and to the fact that it is cultivated (sativa).

It is an essential vegetable in any self-respecting vegetable garden, and there are so many varieties that it can be grown almost all year round.

Growing Lettuce is easy as long as you respect the cultivation calendar for each variety. It grows quickly and thrives in any soil, as long as it is rich and remains moist.

Harvest: Simply cut it with a knife when it is ripe.

Storage: Lettuce can be stored for a few days in the refrigerator, but to enjoy its freshness to the fullest, we recommend consuming it immediately after harvesting.

Gardener's tip: In hot summer weather, lettuces exposed to full sun tend to wilt miserably. To prevent this phenomenon, protect them from intense rays by using overturned crates. In our garden, summer lettuces are not grown in rows, but interspersed throughout: at the base of climbing beans, in the middle of cucumbers and squashes, whose foliage provides beneficial shade.

Note: Please note that our young plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before being installed outdoors once the risk of frost is definitively eliminated.

Planting and care

Lettuce is not a very demanding vegetable but it still requires humus-rich soil, otherwise it tends to bolt prematurely. It is advisable to apply a moderate amount of mature compost by raking it to a depth of 5cm (2in), preferably in autumn, after loosening the soil as you would for any other vegetable cultivation. It prefers slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH between 5.5 and 7.5).

During cultivation, remember that lettuce prefers moist soils and remember to water it regularly.

Lettuce is a good companion plant, it can easily be interplanted with other slower-growing vegetables such as beans, tomatoes, cucumbers... Just avoid planting it next to corn.
